Anyone plant ryegrass for their chickens?

Just put down some ryegrass for the chickie babies, I hope that will give them something green in the colder months. This is the second time I tried putting down the grass, the first time the chickens went right after me and had a feast. This time I put them in a makeshift run (they usually freerange) They looked ticked off but it's only for a couple of weeks , I hope they get over it.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to what to plant to get them thru the winter?

Yes, every year. It makes the yards look great and give the chickens green vegetation all year. They love it!
