A second hen of mine has become ill, both cases are a month apart so I didn’t think it was contagious until now. Symptoms include lethargy, falling over to one side, lack of appetite, tail pointing down, and runny poops sticking to her fluff. They are (were) both my older hens, about 3 or 4 years old (we ended up culling the first one after her condition didn’t improve). They don’t appear to be egg bound, that was my initial thought, but no hard lumps or anything that I noticed, but they both seem like they’ve lost weight.

Things I’ve done: isolation, vitamins and probiotics in water, dewormer, and epsom salt baths.

I’m also very sorry for your losses. And apologies no one got to you sooner. What type of hens were these? When was the last time these hens laid? How do their bellies (below vent, right between their legs) feel in comparison to your other hens? Was there any odd egg laying behavior prior to them getting sick? Such as sitting on the nest for a long time without laying, cracked and mended eggs, abnormally shaped eggs?

Sorry so many questions. How are your other chickens doing?

I'm so sorry for your loss. So do you still have a chicken who is showing these symptoms?

Did these symptoms come on slowly or did it seem like they were really sick all of a sudden?
Sorry I forgot about this post after making it. No other chickens have gotten sick. I cleaned everything in my pump house (where I kept the sick hens) with bleach water and I mucked out and wiped down the whole coop just incase. In a FB group I’m in someone asked about possible exposure to like transmission fluid, and I think that was a good possibility. I have 3 teenage boys, so lots of broken down/wrecked vehicles all over the yard and they’ve been working on switching out a transmission in one of their trucks, I worry the hens got into something like that since they free range 😢
