Anyone ready to ring in the new year...and lose weight/get fit?

I watch DR Oz.... great show.. But I missed it yesterday. I did see it t his week talked about certain food that help burn belly fat.... like eating a few olives a day... or a few pistasio nuts <sp?

They were talking about a book called "The China Study" about western vs eastern eating and the impact that has on disease and the body. Basically talking about a "plant based" diet sounded like vegan to me w/ a different name. I think I'm going to at least read the book.

Vegan - Seems to me that life wouldn;t be much without the odd steak!!!!! Noodles just don;t do it the same way???

Oesdog - less dead than I was !!!!!

feeling a bit better today.

The things that work best for me are:

Not actually going on a diet, because you just think of food and how hungry you are all the time.

Don't eat because it is "mealtime" i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner. Eat only when you are actually hungry. There are a lot of myths that eating constantly makes you lose weight, it's not true for most people, because you are taking in so many extra calories!

Sign up for a gym that has group classes, they are FUN, and if you don't go you'll feel bad that the money is coming out of your account even if you don't go! Building muscle will help you more than anything because it raises your basal metabolic rate. This means you burn more calories just doing day to day things the more muscle you have.

I find I get into phases where I'm eating too much (like staying with my mother) for a period of time and can no longer tell when I am truly hungry/full. Not eating for 1/2 day seems to "reset" this mechanism and you can definitely tell the difference between really feeling hungry/full and thinking you might be.

Get enough sleep! At least 8 hours!

Eat slow, it can take 20 minutes for your body to respond to the food being in your stomach.

Drink enough water, it sounds strange, but is very easy to confuse thirst with hunger. Drink before and while you are eating, you fill up faster and it slows down your eating.

Don't make any foods "off limits" it will only make you want them more, gorge on them when you break, and make you unhappy! Instead, just limit yourself to one bite!

Use SMALL plates and bowls, it really makes a difference in the amount of food you get out for yourself.

Generally, a fist size amount of food should be enough for a meal (unless it is something like salad).

Use fitday.com. It is free. You can track everything you eat and the calories and nutrients you are taking in, your exercise, your measurements, etc. It's very rewarding to see how you've changed over a few months if you stick with it.

If you can't control what you eat, stock up on LeanCuisine, they are healthy and taste great, and are the appropriate amount of calories. Just have to make sure you don't ruin it by eating a bowl of ice cream right after!
Good luck to everyone

There is a big difference in reading the book and adopting a vegan lifestyle

I was intrigued enough on the subject to read the book, but I don't know about the whole vegan thing, especially already GF. If the proof and arguements are compelling enough I would probably make some changes, but we will see. I have to find the book first and actually read it.

I haven't been in on this thread from the beginning, but I've been eating a LOT fewer carbs over the last several months and have lost 14 pounds!!! Congratulations to all those who have adopted a healthier lifestyle!

Hi all!

Havent been round in a while.. but I just wanted to let ya all know that I am slowly meeting my weight loss and fitness goals!

I walked my first 10k in Boston last fall and am now addicted! I am now training for the Marine Corp Honor Run 5k on May 7th in Boston!! I am going to try and run at least 1.5 miles of it. And my dh is also going to be with me..but he is walking it.

I bought a weight bench set last fall and have that and my treadmill in the basement /gym. I have lost one pant size and also dropped one top size since last September. My dh has been using some Kinect game daily and is improving his strength and flexibilty as well.

I feel so much better. My blood pressure is more easily controlled now. The work stress that is making so many of my fellow employees eat and grow out of their clothes... doesnt get me! I sleep better at night. My ENTIRE outlook and attitude is better. Positive and brighter.

so to everyone.. keep up the great work! It is SO worth the sweat and occasional discomfort.

congrats! Those are amazing accomplishments. I hope you come back to share more, its that kind of positive attitude and achievements that we need to hear more of around here. We all just want to give up sometimes, but those are the things that we all wish for... and knowing it is working for someone here makes it easier each day.

The best way for me to lose weight is to cut back on my salt intake and exercise ANY WAY I can. I also try to not think about dieting so I could eat what I want but in moderation. Unfortunately I don't make any promises for the new year because I know I won't keep them, so no need to disappoint myself!

I would advise against eating out more often or buying t.v. dinners (because they have the calorie count on the box) because it's easy to make them (just pop them in the microwave). I would rather spend an hour or two cooking up a storm and working up a sweat before I eat. It makes me feel good eating afterwards because I know I kinda worked out while cooking.
