Anyone ready to ring in the new year...and lose weight/get fit?

So I think I am joining in

I gained 40 ish pounds in the past 2 years after getting sick (lyme, or so my Dr. says). Finally feeling a bit better, and thinking it is about that time!
I started eating "better" the past week or so...Yogurt for breakfast - That is the only thing I can handle eating in the morning (any kind of cereal makes me sick). Usually fruit or toast for lunch, and whatever my mum makes for supper. I'm not a heavy eater and I'm very picky, which makes this a little harder for me. I don't like rice, I don't eat much meat, bread, or pasta, and I tend to avoid anything with lots of sugar. No junk food, soft drinks, or fast food.
I will say, I've lost 5lbs in the past week from switching cereal to yogurt for breakfast...Which is nice, because I have been trying to lose for so long, with no results.

As for exercise, I am out in the barn a good part of the day...Cleaning, riding, and walking up and down the hill to the barn yard...I think my mum said the driveway is about 1/8 of a mile long one way, and I walk up and down at least 10 times a day.
I'm planning on getting into walking on the road again. I've been having issues with my ankle, so that makes it a little more scary to start - I sprained it bad when I was younger, and keep re-spraining it. Hurts more when I'm active (this means running is STILL out for me...Before I got sick, I was running at least every other day for around 45 minutes without issue, but then I sprained it pretty bad again, and haven't recovered enough still. Re-sprained it AGAIN during the fall, thought it was broken that time!)...
So there's my story...My goal is to lose the 40lbs that I gained.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a good work-out (maybe on dvd, or something you do specifically) that would be low impact on a bad ankle?

Thanks Knock Kneed, that is awesome to have an open spreadsheet like that. I see 140 is a pretty good goal weight for a lot of us. I started my diet in September and I guess I'm still happy to be where I am, especially after the holiday. So I came down from 180 to 161 then I put on 3 lbs since Thanksgiving. I am eat right though, I just kinda splurged with things like Turkey & stuffing. (And candy canes!)

But here is a good place to point out my biggest problem...

I'm an after 8pm snacker.... I keep catching myself doing it, and I don't know why!? I was getting better about it, and now I've started up again. Must kick this habit!!!

While I am joining you all, I will not be on the spread sheet.

For my own mental health, I tossed the scale a few years back.

I am going to have to go with pants size lost

mom'sfolly :

I had a mixed veggie taco for dinner. I found the recipe on Spark People. It was very tasty. I didn't even miss the guys' regular taco filling. I did miss the sour cream though. I think the leftovers will be even better, when the flavors have more time to blend. It has onion, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots and tasted surprisingly meatlike without tasting fake. I don't like most meat substitutes because they just taste kinda off to me. I added 1/2 cup black beans to up the protein a little. It made a huge portion, with only about 400 calories.

An almost substitute for sour cream is Fage non fat Greek Yogurt, it is a little bit different but close enough you might discover you don't miss the Sour Cream as much.

It is also good in a fruit smoothie replacing ice cream, just use a sweeter flavored fruit with it

Or in recipes calling for sour cream (no need to tell the kids and hubby that you made that substitution cause it is good for them too)

And if you have a Costco near by, it costs about the same as their gumbo tub of Sour Cream.

My son did not realize, but I made scalloped potatoes the other day, replaced half the cheese and all of the sour cream with half a cup of fat free ricotta (it was a big recipe). While not a diet meal, I did keep the cheesy flavor and drop the fat content a lot (and no one knew)

I think my main problem is lack of water intake...I will go for literally days with out drinking, then drink like crazy...I've been working on that, I'm just not much of a drinker! I'm the kind of person where if I'm not hungry or thirsty, I won't have anything...I'm going to say that is my major downfall!

For lack of knowing how to use the spread sheet, I'm at 199 ish now, my first goal is 180. I'm aiming at 160-70 as a final (The range is because I really do need to remember that there is muscle in that number too, not just grossness).
So I did one of the work outs tonight from sparkpeople...HOLY CRAP DID THAT HURT!!! I took it easy too and only 5 minutes of it...I think different exercise will help a lot...The muscles I normally use are different than what most people work, and they are well worked (I'm sure you active horse riders and (for those who fence), fencers out there will know what I'm talking about!)

And the greek yogurt sounds wicked good...Really want to try that!

I applaud your efforts! Good job on all that water and walking and changing your lifestyle!

May I suggest that, in order to get healthier, substituting aspartame-based soft-drinks for regular may not be a good idea. I know it's not been "proven" but I've see a lot of stuff suggesting that aspartame/nutrasweet/whateverit'scallednow is not good for you. Splenda or stevia based drinks might be worth exploring though. Or even agave, in moderation.

Just my $.03 worth.

Have you tried fat-free plain yogurt instead of sourcream? I find that substitutes really well for many uses for me.

Carol - that's perfectly reasonable. I'm actually more interested in losing a pants size myself than "weight". Maybe we should have a section for "other goals" on the spreadsheet?

ETA: Okay, I've added a second "sheet" to the spreadsheet for "other goals". Feel free to add yourself to one or both.
