Anyone ride a bicycle for exercise?

Yes, hit while cycling. I was going 25 mph when a motorist turned in front of me. totaled my bike. Lots of road rash. Two moths of pain and suffering. A different outlook when it comes to cars around my bike........ The very next day I was out on a bike. My bikes are my health club, without them I'd be not very healthy.

That is horrible!!!! Glad no permenant damage was done (well except to the bike that is). I have worked several mvc's w/ pedestrian vs car and motorcycle vs car.

Almost always been the car drivers inattention, except for one very intoxicated guy at 2 in the am, he was a pedestrian and very much at fault.

I bike to work, for fun, for exercise, to take my son to the library, to go to the store, etc!

Portland, go figure. I'd make some calls to some local bike shops and ask if they build up bikes. You can usually get them to keep an eye out for styles/sizes you want and you'll get something affordable.

Happy riding!

I started with a huffy mountain bike about 15 years ago. It weighed 30+ pounds and is just about impossible to ride on road hills. Last year, I decided to invest in a Raleigh Capri carbon composite bike-it's like riding a cloud. I can carry it in one hand, and (I think) It's so pretty I can't stand it. LOL.

I'd love to do the east end century, but cannot find anyone to do it with me-my husband is studying for the FDNY Captains exam, so all of his spare time is spent in the books. None of my friends bike. Out here by me the hills are HORRIBLE, and nobody is dedicated enough to want to brave them.

In 2 weeks is the cedar beach triathlon, I might do it, just to get into a groove of biking with people-and they close the roads. I'm lucky though-around my town they've started putting in loads of bike lanes, so I can feel a little safer.

Car drivers need to take classes on how to deal with bikes on the road. I've seen cars cut in front of bikes, like they have something to prove. My middle son will ride with me sometimes, but he rides a BMX bike and it's hard to keep up with a road bike.

For a beginner bike look on Craigslist. Many people buy nice hybrids then discover they don't like biking or want to upgrade-that's where the bargains come in. Learn how to change a tube and always have a little air pump with you (They mount right onto the bike!) Most of all-go slow and enjoy the scenery. Speed will come with time, get used to riding first.

$2000 for a bike!!!!!!! my oh my that is sooooooo far out of my price range. I can't even imagine that being in my price range used. My job is already hard on my back I am really wanting more of an upright type, not haunched over like that. I think I'm going to Tulsa tomorrow (nearest city to me that would have a bike shop) I may just go in and see what they have available, but seriously doubt anything will be in my price range.

Hi there,

I ride my Murray Starflite vintage cruiser (rat rod themed) everyday, and its a head turner (hmmm must be the rust on it). my Dad and I restore, and collect (or horde as what my Mom calls it hehe) vintage cruiser.

Cool

I so adore those bicycles, rust is a bonus. They look good restored but I like patina myself. I have a nice bike but I do not ride in the winter (to big of a wimp) there's too many other days that are nice and sunny.

I like biking, mostly for the thrill; not so much the exercise. I've got a Giant Revel 1; which is by far the best bike I have ever owned! (And the bike store guys tell me it's entry level...).

That being said, it is a fantastic workout for the legs.

.You'll really enjoy riding! It will take 2-3 weeks of biking to start building up some endurance. The nice thing about riding a bike is you can get any type of workout your interested in, and it is easy on your joints. As another poster mentioned, it is addicting! I'm an avid mountain biker, hitting the trails 3-4 times per week. The area I live in is a destination for Mountain Bikers( I have a Mountain Biking page/Blog on my website) so lots of trails are available.
I would recommend a gently used used hybrid bike and craigslist is a good place to get a deal on one, especially if you purchase before the spring weather hits.

Thanks for all the info. My job has started a new program where if you go to a personal trainer so many times a quarter they will pay for it. So that is what I have been doing over the past 2 months, but that is 2 days a week. I put the bike thing on hold while I was getting used to the trainer thing (baby steps as I am not what you would call athletic! lol lol lol, unless I pick up a heavy book) The weather is moderating (I don't do cold unless hibernating is called "doing') so I am really wanting to start adding some biking into the mix. This past year there have been several bikers in my area get hit by and killed by autos, that really has me worried.
