Anyone See a Problem Here?

We have a Corgi that knows he is not supposed to lick/snack on/drool on, etc. the chickens.

However, he cannot help himself. I am glad now their run is enclosed. He makes a great watch dog as hawks and buzzards make him sooooo verrrrrryyyy angry he goes insane (probably why the chickens get his gizzard). He runs barking them right off of our 10 acres, sometimes running 100 yards just to be sure the bird doesn't stay "over" our property. Little birds do not bother him, only big ones.

Anyway, last week he slipped out of the house and came to us, carefully going around all the birds while we were working on the run. So we finished part of the fence we were working with and as he was walking up to the house with us, he took off like a bat out of Corgi **** and swooped toward a chicken.

We yelled his name and he made this large arc all the way back to the house without touching a bird. The alarm had been sounded by the roosters, and one bantum even flew to the top of the coop. He walked right up to the front door, as if to say, "I know, I know, only kidding." He cannot be trusted when they are free ranging. Thing is, I know he wants to behave, it just is so hard for him not to go after them. When they were chicks and we introduced him, he salivated heavily and shook watching them. He is a great dog, we are careful to not tempt him.

We have a cocker mix, and when we are in the run with the hens, he will sit motionless a couple of feet away and just stare at the run...and then pounce and send them scattering.

But he only does it when we are giving our attention to the hens. If we're out in the yard doing anything else, he doesn't give the coop a second glance. Maybe he's jealous?

When it's the hens' turn to roam the yard, he doesn't seem to show interest in them when sitting on the lanai or when he's inside the house.

But we don't let him (or our rott/pitt mix) roam in the yard with them. They killed one hen a month or so ago.

I'm so sorry that happened...and that's what I want to avoid. The chicks will be in an enclosed run - too much wildlife out here for them to free-range - but even so, I wouldn't trust Mollie not to try to get in. Sounds like your cocker mix and my Mollie might be related...?

Sounds just like Mollie. This is her instinct - I just didn't realize how strong her instinct really was. And it sounds as though your corgi's drive for chicken might actually be stronger than my Mollie's! I really don't want to tempt her either...but I think I already did

Achickenwrangler#1 :

does she like to dig? hope you plan to bury the coop wire, or provide a baffle around the bottom perimeter. nice looking coop by the way

Thanks, Achickenwrangler#1. She does like to dig but gives up after a while. I have a roll of 2' wide landscape cloth (1/2" holes) that I'll be burying around the base of the run - to keep her and other predators out! Trying to do all the right things to keep my girls and guy safe...

Oh, golly - a YORKIE??? What's that saying - small but mighty

And I think that most full sized chickens might actually outweigh a yorkie
