Anyone set eggs this weekend?

Lori ~ I used to work on a horse ranch when I was in high school and miss being around horses dearly. Do you have any pictures of those beautiful rides? I'd love to see them. I've never been out west and have always wanted to see it out there.
We've got alot of cows but they're not much entertainment for me unless there's a bunch of calves out there jumping around.
One lazy cat and one wild barn kitty. Our only dog passed away last month.

I haven't been ready to even think about getting another dog yet.

Susan ~ I hope the turner makes for a better hatch for you this time around. My husband (I think I forgot to mention my sweetheart too) has been doing alot of reading on dry incubation. It sure makes alot of sense to me. This is our first attempt at hatching anything so we're just watching the humidity really close. I've added some, taken out some, and hope i'm not killing these little things!

One of my hens layed a GIANT egg today! It's so funky looking. The thing even looks like it's got strech marks on it. It's so big, I can't put it in an egg carton! What's up with that????

I get to have an ultrasound today although it's way too early to tell what gender we'll be having. It's still pretty fun ~ kind of like candleing my belly.

I'm off to go fix my hair and smear some makeup on so I won't scare anyone when I go out.

I candled this evening and am quite pleased. I didn't candle each one because I didn't want to keep opening up the bator, but all of the ones I did candle have really nice embryos with great spider like webbing. I am thrilled!!!

Plus, the one standard size egg in there with the bantam daddy, also has an embryo growing. So, just as soon as that booger busts out of its shell, i'll have to post some pics of the odd little creature.
Yippity Skippity!!!!! I've got gobs of little chickie poos!

Ok, now I have to go candle and see if I can see anything in the few light brown eggs I have!!!. Everything else is dark, so I won't be able to candle, but maybe I can see something in my lighter eggs.????

I don't have very many pictures of our high country rides, but I'll try to find the few I have. I'm terrible about bringing my camera, and when I do bring it I forget to take pictures! My husband bought me a nice digital recently, so maybe this summer I can get some pictures and post them.

I'm off to candle. . . .

ARRRGGGHHH! I must be the world's worst candler!! I looked at several eggs last night and had no idea what I was looking at. I have studied every sight with candling pictures that I could find and I still never see what I think I'm supposed to.

Maybe 3 days is just too early for me to be trying to candle???

Donna Sue, did you crack open that huge egg to see what was inside?

How are everybody's incubators working?

This year I started to really get into raising chickens. DW has given me a lot of room to do it , in the basement, the barn and yard.

I have two laying hens and a rooster (silver laced WY).

I hatched 29 live chics and all are doing well, the wait is at times tough. If you know how to candle an egg it makes the wait easier because you can see the progress.

Good luck and stay calm.

Lori, i'd say to try again tonight. I couldn't belive how much change one more day made with mine. I hope i'll be able to see something moving in there this weekend sometime. I set mine on friday night, so maybe as early as this friday I can see some movement.
No, I haven't cracked the giant egg yet. I've got it stored in the butter compartment of our fridge so when we go to fix eggs next i'll bust it open. A friend of mine looked at it and said he thinks it's a double yolker. I need to get a picture of it and post it on here. It's so freaky!
Well, i'm off to turn the eggs again and go lay down. I don't think this baby wants me to eat anymore. Every time I do I pay dearly for it.

Well, I set my eggs on Thurs morning which is not really the weekend but can I join? I got some eggs shipped to me by Jaynie. There are 15 and I candled last night (day 5 for me) and I have about 5 that were not developing. I have not taken any out, but I can see no signs of veins yet and the others have veins and babies already. So not much hope there. 3 or 4 were Salmon Faverolles and the other was a silkie I think. I have some more SF's and some black silkies and a couple of cuckoo silkies and a couple of blue sizzle silkies. So I hope they hatch. I have the little giant still air and I am having a time with temp. I had a spike yesterday and it was up to 104 in the bator with the egg temp (inside the water weasel) at 102. So I pray I did not damage the embryos. Dang weather. It gets cool at night and then hot hot during the day. I have moved the bator to another room where no one is in and out but I swear it stays warmer in there and I guess that is why the spike. I adjusted the bator temp and then it went down to 98. So dang it. I am going to use my broody hen next time and try to catch her sitting and swap eggs on her. She is an OEGB hen and I have enough OEGB's. She and the roo and two babies. So I can use her to hatch out others. Good luck to everyone.

Oh, and I also have newborn holland lop babies!!!

Hi Everyone,

I checked three eggs, and they all look different - I'm horrid at candling, but it's fun to try. Mine just don't want to look like the pictures! I can usually tell if there's a chick in there around day 24 or so....

Welcome in Marie! I have a LG too, and had a tough time with temperature control last hatch. I think mine is behaving better this go around because we're into AC season. The house is a very constant temperature now, where last hatch, we were up and down at night. Now it's temps are staying in a pretty tight range - I think my high has been 102.3 and my low 99.9. I got really paranoid last hatch, and got a recording thermometer, with an alarm on it for spikes.

Have you seen:

http://chickscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/explore/

It has some neat egg images, and a huge MRI database you can query to see images on given days, from certain angles. I can't candle worth beans, but maybe with an MRI I could see something!

Have fun everyone!

UGH - We're having a lightning storm. The power just flickered... losing the bator to a power spike, or just losing power is one thing I haven't really worried about, yet...

Hi Marie,
Sounds like you are going to have lots of different peeps when they hatch!! How exciting!!

Guess I'll try candling again tonight. If I still don't see anything I'm gonna wait until Sunday or Monday. Surely at 8 or 9 days I should be able to see something??!!!

Goodness, these 21 days are going by so slowly!!!

Lori
