Anyone setting eggs May 1st?

Well I candled again this morning, I can see eight swimmers out of 25 eggs. About 10 eggs are still too dark to know for sure and I fear the rest not fertile. Not giving up hope yet. I will try again Wednesday. Those little guys should be large enough to see by then.

I candled the duck eggs that were set on the 1st. There was movement in all of them! :D All 5 kids, hubby, and I, had a blast watching them. This is such a wonderful 1st experience for me.

We also candled a couple of the chicken eggs that were set on Thursday. There was development in them. :)

Ms Broody-butt's 7 eggs are looking good. They are due to hatch on Friday. This is going to be an exciting week.

Just did a quick day 11 check... out of the 16 I started with, only 7 are remaining... The eggs are looking kinda full now, and not distinctive as they were.... so im hoping they are just growin and growin!!

Weighed the eggs today and all but a couple are spot on as far as wt loss someim going to keep everything as is. Will candle tomorrow as I've already had them out today to weigh and it's easier to see at night when the room is dark.... Don't want to mess w them again today...

wow!! Looks like everyone is having some fun candling, even if we have had to chuck out a few. Bog, i think if it is warm enough outside, i wouldnt really worry about her being off the nest for a while..

i have my bator in my bedroom... figure it gets the least traffic and not drafty... i woke up the other morning.. FREEZING! appearantly DH got too warm and opened a window, by the time it dawned on me, i got up and looking in the bator and it was only 95... but.. i let it warm back up and candled a few that evening and all looks ok, other than the 2 questionables definately dont have anything going on, so they will be tossed tonight.. and I think one of the twins quit.. actually, im pretty sure of it, so even though the other is in there moving all around, i am not holding any hope for it...i just cant bring myself to take it out yet.

hope everyone had a good weekend!! mine was busy!! spring cleaning, weeding the flower beds, remulching, i drained my koi pond and scrubbed it out a little, refilled, started all the seeded for the garden, butchered 4 of my meat chickens, took my oldest daughter to school yesterday at 6:30 am (on mothers day.. really!!??) her class left for D.C. for a few days. went to my moms and saw the progress on my dads coop-mahal! he took a lot of ideas from mine for his!! that made me feel good since I put a lot of thought into mine! and he is an old pro builder and had chickens for years!!

and lastly, sorry for the book!!, we have another bunch of eggs coming in the mail, hopefully today, for me to set in the bator!

I candled today as best I could. The coop was still pretty light with the pop door open and since I have been locked in this coop before I didn't pull the doors shut completely.

3 of the 13 pyncheon eggs have swimmers, 3 more I could not be sure of and gave back to her. I pulled 2 before that were scrambled in the shell. The 5 I removed today never started or quit early.

This broody is fun to play tug of war with. She kept rolling them back under if I set them down anywhere she could reach them.

ETA. I got an email today, the quail eggs are ready for pick up at the post office. Time to fire up the incubator again.

so we got our next shipment of eggs in the mail yesterday. very dissapointed to say the least with the way they were packed. The first egg I took out of the box was broken, i could feel the wet through the bubble wrap. 10 more were ok, but there was another broken.. both sides, looked like someone squeezed it. I dont have much hope for these ones, even though they were the most expensive so far, and based on the reviews we figured they would be well packed... the box didnt look damaged at all. they werent even shipped big end up, so they are resting now, i will candle and set them when I got home. i was planning on putting them in this morning, but I think the extra time might be beneficial.

Best of luck with those! I have two boxes, possibly three, arriving this week. The one box I feel fairly confident that it will arrive perfect, just got that vibe with that one I guess

, hopefully the other one will too. I haven't had a broken one yet but I get a lot of scrambled.

I've been holding out on taking away my broody's unfertile eggs, you know, just in case. I think tonight I just have to do it

. I think she will end up with 4 out of twelve, not very good odds on that box at all......

I'm getting so excited! Our broody's chicks are due to hatch in the next couple of days. I'm so tempted to go candle them, but I'm making myself wait until tomorrow. We've been busy doing some modifications to the coop, getting ready for the chicks. We added poop-boards and fixed the nesting boxes. Next we will build a big broody box/brooder under the board where the dog crate is. Here's some pics.
