Anyone setting eggs May 1st?

Welcome eveyone that has joined us. Looks like we're going to get lots of participation. :) Sorry I've been MIA but internet issues have prevented me from doing a lot of computer stuff. I have resorted to using my kindle too but turned off the auto correct function after the last straw when it posted to put gasoline on a chicks pasty butt instead of vasoline.

My eggs at school seem to be doing good. I candled one egg on Thursday and was able to show veining to the students. I didn't do anything else to the eggs except to turn the knob a tiny bit today and brought temperatures back to 100° instead of 101°. Probably would have been alright but I don't want to have the hatch be any earlier than I can help it. As it is we don't have school Monday and there will be nothing I can do to get into the building until Tuesday so I'd rather not have early hatchers.

I only have hatchery Brahmas but they have the sweetest temperament and the sweetest voice.

Love them!

I set 2 turkey eggs on May 1st. Then I set 7 Genetic Hackle eggs in the same incubator on May 2.

I wasn't sure if the turkey eggs would do anything--the hen's tom was processed a month earlier, then I sold the hen and I got the first couple eggs she laid at the new place. The tom there was a lonely BBB. So I really wasn't confident the eggs would be fertile. It seems there might be activity in the eggs, but I think it's early (candled on day 8) and I really have no experience incubating eggs.

The Genetic Hackle eggs were shipped, and I've got 3 growing for certain. I'm waiting until day 10 or 14 to decide on the others. I'm super excited for these potential chicks!

I know it's not the best idea to put the turkey and chicken eggs together, but I didn't want the shipped eggs to wait a week before putting them in the incubator, and I put the turkey eggs in as soon as I could. Regardless, I can borrow a second incubator for the turkey eggs once the chicken eggs are ready for lockdown.
I have turkey incubating also. First time, very excited.

I remember reading about this somewhere. The 2 things that popped into my mind now are - watch to make sure the air cell is growing properly and they may need help at hatch time because the shell is to strong for them to zip open now.

Best wishes for a successful hatch.
The first one's air cell seemed large to me, but the egg is very long. The second one is more a trick of the eye. But I will be marking them during candling today to keep a better eye on. Thanks for the tips.

It bit me several times actually haha. I have buff laced brahmas and wheaten Americans peeping as we type. The 12 eggs my broody hen and I are sharing are lavender brahmas. And on Thursday I set 18 black copper marans and four of my own buff brahmas.

Love to see pics of the Lavender Brahmas.

I had a cracked egg that I did not incubate. Now I wish that I would have tried what you are trying. Liquid bandaid is a good idea. It should keep the bacteria out. I'm going to try that next time. I hate losing an egg due to a superficial crack.

The wait is worse this time because last year my rooster was not getting the job done and after 40 eggs, I had two fertile eggs hatch. My luck to get a rooster who has mounting issues. I guess I should not have named him Ducky, not a masculine rooster name but it fit him. I love him too much to cull him, but this year I have added a new rooster to the pen to help out with the girls. Most of my ladies do not like the new young guy but I am hoping some of them have been cooperative. Most of the eggs that we have eaten have been fertile, but not all.

I put 16 eggs under a broody Cochin on the 5th. One egg got squished. I candled tonight and have good veining in 13 of the remaining 15 eggs. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks.

I candled tonight and saw nothing.

To be fair 1 egg is welsummer, 2 OE's--very dark, But the BLRW , Buckeye showed nothing either. Feeling frustrated.

Dixie went off the nest today for about 45 minutes to an hour. Drinking, soaking up sun, Scratching in the woods. Soon I noted she was sort of looking at the coop then I sort of herded her back into the run and lifted her to her broody coop. She went right onto her eggs..."Bick-Bicking" away. So cute. I hope its not all for nothing.

I'm really disheartened and skeptical about these eggs and wondering that I might have to make a run to the tractor supply Memorial weekend to buy her some chicks.
