Anyone setting eggs May 1st?

We got official word today. Our son is coming home tomorrow!!!!! They will be getting a heroes welcome and then we get to finally hug him!

They were on a dangerous mission in Afghanistan. I didn't realize how much underlying stress I carried while he was gone. As the stress subsides now that they are back I have been in tears a lot for no apparent reason. Now we just need to keep them in prayer for them to reintegrate into normal life quickly.
thats wonderful!!! thank him for me.

so yesterday was day 20 for the shipped BLRW eggs.. and all 6 that made it to lockdown hatched!! plus one of my own and another silkie!! i need to figure out which one of those little girls lay such a large egg...

but i was so thrilled that all 8 eggs hatched! only thing is.. 3 of the shipped eggs, the chicks have curled toes... is this normal? I have never had this happen before..i am wondering if it is because they were a day early.. but i havent touched the temps on the incubator since i started it 5 weeks ago, and both my therms are reading the same as always...

i dont know.. but i hope they dont have problems... poor little babies! I put them in the brooder with my 3 ..2 week old ones.. and they dont seem to be bothering the little guys.

they hatched quick too! I went home at lunch and one was out.. 2 hatched while I was there. the kids called at 3:30 and said another hatched.. and by the time I got home at 4:30.. i was just in time to watch the last one come out!

I have an egg pipping right now and it's day 19. My last chicks I hatched, hatched on day 20. I guess I have early birds. None have had curly toes on my first early birds so maybe there is another reason for your birds doing that. I'd just wait it out and see what happens. Good luck.

I just read on Grit Magazine's web site that both feet indicate a nutritional problem in the hen while one foot is likely a hatching problem.

Good luck with them.

How are they doing? Are you getting their toes straightened?

I got 2 of them mostly straight. the ones left are outside toes.. and they arent bad, but one little one has the middle toe all wonky..i keep trying to boot it.. but they dont stay on with electrical tape.. so I am going to get some bandage wrap and try again tonight..she walks around ok even with them bent... so I am not too worried.. at least they arent curled up like when they hatched!

i need to go back through here and find when I set my duck eggs! i seem to have lost track! Im fairly certain they go into lockdown next sat tho! It is so crazy busy here lately!

Congrats on all the hatches!! Turkeys maybe be next year!

I thought I would post a picture update of Dixie and her brood. So my main support BYC peeps could follow a bit on our brood. Today I brought Dixie up closer to the house and the gardens. I got Dixie as a two year old hen and previously I think she was kept mainly in pens. So I call her a bit " institutionalized". She likes the feel of the coop and run more than free ranging I think...it's what she knows. With the help of my daughter and some protesting by Dixie we got them under cover of some peonies, hostas, and poppies and the deck...and I think Dixie is enjoying it now. LOL. I'll help her get the chicks back down to the coop. But for now I can't help feeling this is good for them.
