Anyone setting eggs May 1st?

My 12 Bresse chicks came home from school today. They are 3 weeks old today. We set 15 eggs May 3rd. One failed to develop, one developed but failed to hatch. And one hatched and failed to thrive. The rest are strong and healthy and so so friendly. They came home to hatch over Memorial Day weekend and then went back to school for the last three weeks. So great to have them back with us. I bought caponizing tools - we'll see if I dare. In any event they'll head to freezer camp in September and October. Next week we'll build them a coop. For now they are in a brooder in the garage. Fun to have babies again!

they kept them for 3 weeks!? thats pretty cool. ours only keep them for a day or 2 (so they dont have to feed them) they change so much in 3 weeks! i will have to look up breese... im not sure what they are!!

Molly: you're still just a-going, huh?! Wow. Beautiful pic of that duck in the incubator. Amazing and so tiny!

The chicks are growing leaps and bounds and will soon be bigger than Dixie! LOL. Not much saying though...our sweet Dixie isn't that big as a Silkie Momma.

As a matter of fact I took some pics today of them for the breeder that I got the eggs from just to see what she thinks for Boys vs. Girls.








We tried to get Dixie to take these two about 5 days after hatching her two eggs...but she rejected them so these are my brooder babies: a Buckeye and Wellsummer. We're in love of course and have bonded with these two.

wow they are getting big! The buckeye. ..looks a LOT like my blrw! What's the broody baby with the orange face? So cute!

The Blue & Black came from Olive Egger Mom. And are Cochin over Ameracauna I think she said.

The Brown: is suppose to be a Welsummer...but I see hints of Blue in the wing pattern and trying to sex this Wellie I was looking at pictures of chicks which I guess you can tell-- and He/She has classic head patterns for neither. So I wonder if I have Wyandotte Mix of some sorts there....? In fact I thought the head pattern seemed very much like Wyandottes! The Buckeye of course is the yellow chick coming in rust color feathers.

Now I have an "excuse" to go take some more pictures of my littles.

We had a tragedy yesterday. Our 15 yr old son was rounding up the ducklings after free-ranging for a while. One of them was stubborn and running away so my son chased her. Well, she stopped suddenly and my son could not. He was bawling for hours! I guess it was pretty gruesome. Very traumatic. I came home a few hours later and he started bawling all over again. (wish I could do the little sobbing face here, but can't on my phone)

So.. The incubator is finally off and cleaned out! Out of 11 duck eggs.. we got 4. And if anyone is curious. . They were out of eggs I washed or cleaned. None of the 5 I left alone made it...so.. for next year I will know!

Sugar hatched 2 chicks and I gave her the blrw I had in the bator!

Joyful...sorry about your son's experience. Awe. That's a tough one.

The picture of sugar and chicks is so precious. I wish I had a little BLRW.... I just wish those eggs would have done something. Never again on shipped eggs.

After some discussions with the breeder we figured out that this brown chick is not a Welsummer but rather a Barnevelder. I'm thrilled with that option although will miss out on the dark brown eggs. Oh well. She says her birds have beautiful penciling and we look forward to how Lucy turns out. She is so friendly and sweet. Jumps up and hitches a ride with you sometimes. Love her.

Joyful post some pictures of your chicks and ducklings that you hatched. I always like Poultry Eye candy.
