Anyone setting eggs starting July 15 -July 22?

I did the same thing the other day. only I accidently dropped it into my homemade incubator it didnt puncture the membrane that I could see so I put nail polish over the entire cracked area to seal it. But I guess it wasnt far enough along for it to help and it didnt make it

. It stopped moving in its egg and the next day it was obvious that it had died it was lifeless.

I would love to see a photo of your set-up! Do you have a thermometer and/or hygrometer in your "incubator"?
I have about the same amount of time left with my eggs so I hope we will both have Grand Announcements to make on hatching day!

I ordered my silkie bantam mix eggs when my hen went broody but by the time I got them she had stopped and would not sit on them. So I had to think quick I took a thirty gallon fish tank and put just enough hot water to cover the bottom and I took a cookie cooling rack and placed it inside and put my eggs on it then I hooked up my red chick warming light and put aluminum foil all around the top to keep in heat and moisture in. Its been 11 days now and so far they are doing good. I cross my fingers that my little babies hatch. I have always wanted silkies. I started out with 8 eggs and my hen trampled 4 of them I saved four so I hope I hope I hope they all make it

I just candled my eggs, as it is day 12 for me.
Another one died.
And to think I began with 12 eggs!

If this was a competition, I'm pretty sure I would be in the running for the worst hatching rate.

I am sorry . How do you know the embryo died, no movement? On day 5, I could see movement in most of my eggs. On day 9, yesterday, I only see movement in some, but I could't tell whether an embryo is just resting or if it had died so I have not discarded any. There is no bad smell so I am assuming they are all good still.

Yours are probably still good.
I had candled mine on day 9, and the embryo in that egg had no movement.
When I candled today, there was a massive blood ring around the embryo, and it also began to smell a little bit, so I knew it was dead.

I'm really hoping my three silkies make it though!

I hope they do! There are going to be so many cute silkie pics by the time this hatch is over

Ok guys and gals heres my makeshift setup thats working wonders so far. I always keep the bottom covered with water to help with humidity. I do not have a thermometer I know that is risky but i just go by the feel of the eggs when I touch them to my face they feel like my kids skin when they have a fever and so I guess Im playing by ear on this one. day 13 going great!

Just a recommendation - don't toss incubated eggs unless they begin to smell.
Candling can be a bit of a guessing game unless you are very experienced.
Just my humble opinion but your nose is your best good egg/bad egg guide.

Hey everyone!

I set my batch on the 18th, may I join you?

I've got 12 eggs in right now.
4 Frizzle Standard Cochins
1 Lavender Orpingtion
2 Easter Egger
1 Lavender Ameruacana
4 Milie Fleur D'uccle

So far, I only see 2-3 clear eggs [though I haven't candled nearly as much this batch as I did my last batch...which, subsequently probably has something to do with why I see so many moving babies this time around!] My last hatch rate was pitiful at 36%.

This time, I set them and pretty much forgot about them [other than checking the temperatures 2x daily] I've pretty much left them alone. Hopefully I'll have a better success this time around. All but 2 of my silkie babies from the last batch have gone to their new homes and I'm not 100% sure that I'm going to keep the 2 that are left....I'm just not sure I want a flock of bantams...but we'll see.

I think, after this hatch I'm going to start looking for some silver laced wyandottes...they're so so so pretty
