Anyone setting eggs tomorrow (13th March, EDD Apr 3rd)

So what does everyone do with xtra roos?? Im afraid from all the hatchings, Im going to end up with so many roos. And I dont know what to do with them!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Roosters...a lot of people put them in their freezers...we haven't been able to do this ourselves....yet.

I'm hoping to sell them on Craigslist if we need to. We have a friend with a lot more acreage and he offered to take anything we don't want. So I'm going to try selling first and if that's a no go they are going to him. Some feed stores will take them also and sell them for you. You could also list them here for sale.

Probably craigslist for me too. I listed a rooster a month ago, for free, and could have rehomed him seven times over. Thats why I stick with pure breeds and rare breeds if possible, because they are easier to sell or rehome and I haven't yet been able to, um, put them in the freezer.

I only have room for about 10 more hens and 4 or 5 more ducks, so if I end up with more than that I may either sell straight run chicks/ducklings, or breeding threesomes when they're older. To be honest I imagine my hatch rate won't be that high this first time and am considering it more a learning eperience - I'm bound to mess it up somewhere along the line. If by chance I get lots of chicks at least I have these options in mind.

Only one chick out and another pip. DH says humidity is super low. Having him add hot wet wash cloth - hopefully we will have something else hatch...... I'm a bit nervous about it though......

I'm back, did ya miss me?

I gotta go get my eggs, they were at "grandpa and grandma's" house for the weekend and when we got home last night it was 50 degrees in our house (ran out of fuel) so I left the eggs at my moms for the night till our house warmed up a smig.
I'm gonna candle tonight and see if anything went bad. some how they didn't stick with my rotation schedule ?? I had it taped to the top on the bator and they some how ended up on the wrong side over last night ?? I'm clue less

and I got home to 21 eggs in 2 days??? I only got 11 hens! I guess both of my silkies are laying now hu?

I was just logging online wondering if you had come back yet.

I think the rotation thing will be ok...if they turned them at all. Thats the part I dont trust letting someone else do it.

I candled mine the other day. The 2 batches to hatch next. Have 1 thats day 20 today (with the way my hatches have been going, I fully expect nothing till day 22 and 23). There were 5 in that set. Had to take 1 out as it hadnt developed at all. I had a hard time seeing into it, but day 18 was the point that I should have seen a dark mass. But it wasnt there.

The eggs with ED 4/3, none had to be taken out since the 1st candling. YAY! I started with 12 and had taken 2 clears out. But the other day, the 10 remaining were all doing well!! I even saw a silhouette (sp) of ones head...that was neat!
I believe 3 are silkies. A local lady gave me 12 from her mix of chickens so I could try hatching non shipped eggs.

Im not sure if you were here when I got my shipment of chicks from ideal last week?? I got my 10 silkies

(and they put 10 packing peanuts in, yikes! Another BYC'er says they look like barred rocks, which is nice, I wanted 1, but not 10 boys.) All of them are doing well, no loss.

Anyway, hope you had a good trip. Glad to see you back safe. Only a few days left to go

The family & I went to the Dells (Wisconsin Dells) stayed at hotal rome and played at the indoor water park and amusment park. boy the weekend was long. The kids are just now waking up this morning (it's 11am here)

I did go back and read what I missed and I loved the pictures. I want those silkies!

I have now confermed my thoughts on what the small brown eggs in my bator are. I was hoping they were silkie but there brahma. on the plus side my silkie is back to laying again and apparentally my other one is laying now too, which means one of them will be broody soon

guess what I will do?? yer right! I got those silkie eggs sitting and tilting right now just a waiting for a broody. If no broody by the time these eggs in the bator all hatch, in they go!!

Loopy, the time has gone quite fast, I'm surprised! I knew when I left we were going to be in the last stretch but when I looked at my handy dandy cheat sheet last night I almost dropped my teeth! 2 Days till lock down!!

one question though, do we lock down the beginning of day 18 or the end of it? or just some time day 18? I think I'm thinking to much. Their gonna get locked down sometime Wed. (my day 18)
