Anyone setting eggs tomorrow (13th March, EDD Apr 3rd)

Christy- ty.

I know what you mean about straglers!! This is actually only day 20 for me, sometime midnite or so will be day 21. Ive read on here alot about bantams hatching early but my bant cochins hatched day 22 and 23. And my last batch of standard breeds hatched day 20 and 21. So

Full crops are a good thing...shows they are eating well.
You are talking about your chicks that have been in the brooder, right?

Its just a sort of storage area where the grit breaks food down before the food goes on into the stomach. You'll see it bulge on your hens at night as they go to bed...just prominent on chicks because they are skinny still.
Newly hatched chicks have absorbed the yolk directly into their stomach thats why you don't see it on them when they hatch (though they do have bulgy tummies instead).
Is all good

If you ever have an adult hen with a crop that is solid then its got a problem. They should be soft. Just for future reference

Yep, only in a brooder..they arent even a week yet. Ive never seen/felt it on any of my other chicks.
Once you mentioned the crop...I thought about when I was feeling it...it did feel like their little pieces of food. Nothing else noticably wrong with them. They were running around, drinking just fine. I moved them from my little brooder for new babies to the larger one with other chickies. Thats when I noticed it. Didnt notice it just ealier this afternoon when I added food/cleaned and added water.
Shew...thats good then. Its nothing bad. I had been reading about impacted crop and crop disease on here and really starting to get worried!

At what age should they get grit? I havent been feeding them chick grit because I didnt think I had to till they started getting treats or going outside or off of the chick food.

I'm joining this a little late. I have a sebright that started going broody on March 12th. She was sitting on 2 eggs in a new nest box that I had left in the box to get the sebrights to use it. I brought 3 eggs back from the house and added them to the nest. She accepted them no problem. When she got up to go on her daily walkabout I saw there were 7 eggs total.

When I moved her to our brooder area there were 9 eggs. I don't know when they were added to the nest. I guess sometime within the 1st 3 days or so.

I figured the first eggs would be due the 1st. So far nothing.

Oh it's an odd mix too. The father is my RIR rooster. All 9 eggs are sebright eggs. I have 2 of them. I've seen my rooster mate with both of them, and I've seen bulls eyes on the yolks.

Do you think there is still a chance they will hatch?

The broody has been going out everyday to eat, poop, drink, and dust bathe.

Thanks!!

So I decided to open my bator and remove some of the chicks and consoladate into one egg carton and one of the eggs I moved had pipped at the wrong end. I placed it on it's side on the wire rack and am hoping it will make it. The pip sight looks rubbery, I don't know how else to explain it. It looks like rubber cement is painted around it. Has anyone else had this happen and what should I do. Also since I placed all the unpipped eggs on the wire wont they be at a lower temp? Should I increase my temps for them? I have 10 eggs left in there and one silkie chick that was just hatching. Hopefully someone can help me out here.

JJchiknshak - Welcome!!! Afraid I don't know much about broody hens either, but good luck with your hatch!!!

Stumble - YEAH on the silkie!!!!

christytrav - I wouldn't mess with the temp, I think they'll be fine. Not sure about the gunk....could it be leftover yolk seeping out since it's at the wrong end?

MY UPDATE:

We have 9 chicks!!!! We have 4 of our cochin's now and a 5th one is pipping, 3 blue andalusion, 1 BLRW and 1 BBS bantam cochin. Although one of them I am a little nervous about, our 3rd blue andalusion. He had pipped a complete hole out of the shell earlier today, and for the rest of the day his beak stuck out of it and he was chirping away all day but hadn't moved. So thinking that he was stuck, we decided to help him out and he is just so slow coming around. Funny someone mentioned a "growth" on the right side, because he has this too and I thought it may be the crop but wasn't sure, but it seems to make sense. So we helped him out around 8:00pm (Pacific time) and I checked on him at 10:00 he was totally dry and crusty, so I gave him a little bath in hopes of helping him to fluff out better. His feathers around his face are really plastered down and one of his eyes is too. I was too scared to clean around there very well. He does seem to be a bit more active now, so we'll see. Cross your fingers for us!!! We have one more currently zipping and a few more with evident pips. But I think I'm heading to bed to see what sleep I can get tonight.

G'night!
Tamara

I wouldnt worry about the gunk. I had a nasty gunky one last hatch. I wiped with warm wet cloth but didnt help much. It took a few days, but the gunk went away. I just didnt want to get the chick completely wet and chilled.

I believe I lost my larger egg pip. I was looking close and thought the pip looked a weird color, so I picked the pip shell off. There was blood on the white membrane. I opened it a bit and noticed a blood clot looking thing between the chicks face/beak and body. I moved the thin/clear membrane away from its mouth. Last time I checked, didnt look like chick was breating anymore....poor thing.
In my short time of hatching, Ive never seen blood after a pip or a blood clot looking thing anywhere.
Poor baby..
