Anyone Setting Eggs Tonight 3/31/2011 - Come join me if you like!

Ooops! I meant to say shipped Chicks. I have an LG and I was doing this hatch for my daughter's science fair project. I also want to get fresh eggs. Don't get me wronng. I love these little guys/gals. It is to time consuming. Why not let some broody hen hatch the eggs?

It doesnt have to be though. I think a lot of it is the incubator. Sure many have sucess with LG's and Hovabators but many dont and those who own Brinseas NEVER complain about hatches. I have eggs developing beautifully in my Brisnea and I have since ordered two more!!! Sure I have not had a good hatch. It was my first time and I have learned a lot and everything comes easier with time. If you dont plan to incubate any more, what are you going to do with shipped eggs??

Broodys work the best! Nature's incubators lol the problem is getting a broody lol I have a Cochin that went broody so I threw some faverolle eggs under her...she's the one that last hatch hatched out my faverolle serama cross (was supposed to be a faverolle silkie cross, but I guess my now deceased serama rooster tagged her first lol). I'm curious as to what factors caused her to want to go broody. I might be experimenting with her to see how I can get her to do it again lol

Well, I think our hatch is done! We started with 9 bantam Ameraucana eggs, threw 1 out early, and hatched 6 (5 wheatens, 1 black). We had 8 Silkie eggs, threw out 1, had 1 die while hatching, and hatched 4 (3 splashes and 1 black). The hatch spread across Days 22, 23, & 24 -- the last one just hatched and I had to help a little bit, but he's out now and looks good. I don't think I'm going to candle the duds, if they haven't pipped by Day 24 I think they're not going to.

All in all DD and I are pleased, especially since this was our very first hatch and I didn't have a clue. I did just follow the instructions on the HovaBator re: humidity rather than obsessing over the hygrometer (which I think was inaccurate anyway). Thanks to you all for the encouragement! Here's a photo of the babies (except the one who just hatched):
