I was reading some of the posts today and ran across this post

"At day 7 you should see a dark mass that sits on one side of the egg. When slowly turned it won't move much. A bad egg at the same day will appear runny. If its infertile it will be clear."

that is exactly what my eggs look like...whoever posted this described in detail what I'm seeing when I candled at day 4. Of course I will wait and candle again at day 10 but I figured that runny thing is not supposed to be there....according to all the pic's I've seen here or gotten by googling, of normal 4 day eggs, they look nothing like what I have...but this poster got it right down to a tee....but that's exactly what it looks like...some sort of runny glob moving slowly from one end of the egg to the other whenever you move the egg...

darn it and dag-nabit!

Most of mine are like that as well. I have not touched my eggs today!

And I am not going to until day 7. I will say all my eggs do have a dark mass....None that are clear. I do have MANY that will move from one side to the other freely. Guess we will see.

Here is a picture of my bator. You can't see the water but there are 3 tubes going into the bator because there are 3 different resevoirs for water. This has worked GREAT! The food coloring has stained the white on the bater but it is broken up so I can tell the difference between the water and the stain line. I also got little corks at Ace Hardware to plug the tubes so moisture doesn't get out.

Any sneek candling? I have managed to keep a steady temp since 11:30 this afternoon. I have not gone in the incubator and I will not! Even when it gets dark and I can see the egg better.......

Thanks chickflick247, that's a great idea! I may try the food coloring. I also bought a hygrometer so I can be a little more attentive to humidity. I will say the HovaBator 1588 seems rock solid temperature-wise, no wacky temperature fluctuations here.

I also bought a more powerful flashlight today at Lowes -- an "Energizer LED Inspection Light", 40 lumens, for $13.99. WOW, what a difference! I used my husband's LED mini-Maglight yesterday and thought I had 6 definites, 7 "maybes", and 6 duds. I used the new one tonight and the additional lumens made everything as clear as a bell. It's also got a really small lens which fits right up against the egg without light leaking out, which was a problem with these bantam eggs. We candled again tonight and discovered we actually have 18 out of 19 developing and only 1 dud! Well worth the money, DD and I are both really excited now.

I am beginning to see why hatching can be addictive....even though we haven't seen a fuzzy peep yet. We're trying not to count them before they hatch.

I had a temp spike so I candled and I have mixed reviews. I have a few without any air cells at all

not sure what I am to do with those. I still only have about 5 eggs where I can see a black dot and almost all 8 of my Americauna eggs have veins. The rest.....Nothing seems to be happening. So I guess I will know more in a few days if I can keep my hands out of the incubator. However I am only in there for a sec and my temps go right back to normal within 5 mins.

I have decided its ok. Its my new reward for all my worry during the day I had someone tell me to open the lid once a day anyway like a hen would get off her eggs. And in the evenings I always seem to have a temp spike so I crack the lid anyway.....Why not candle? I am already in there. I have decided its not a bad thing but limit myself to before bed and only the once!!!!!

I will be candling my quail eggs tonight and see what I have growing. There are 31 and they were shipped here to Ny from IN so this should be interesting. So far of my own chicken eggs (barnyard mix) all 22 that are in the bator are growing as they should be. I use a Little Giant styrofoam bator without a turner or fan and I open the lid at least once a day and I mess with the thermometer if its need. I don't know what all the commotion is about opening the bator and such cause I did last my last hatch alot and had to mess with the temps alot and I still got 26 out of 36 eggs to hatch, course it would have been better if my temp hadn't spiked that once Oh well can't win everytime! LOL Hoping for a good quail hatch though. Good luck everyone! We are on day 11 for the first 8 eggs set (I am doing a staggard hatch).

What kind of quail?? I found a local seller on Craigslist and getting 24 hatching eggs and 6 day old chicks in about two weeks, Cortunix Quail....how exciting for you on your hatches!!
