Anyone that ships hatching eggs(maybe of interest)

I have a friend who works for FedEx and said that if the box says fragile it is a target for the employees who move the boxes. Evidently there are quite a few nasty employees out there that just do not care.

So my friend says never put fragile on the box and always insure it, even if you have to lie and bring something broken from home (a code item like a cake plate!). Can you insure eggs?

I was told by my postmaster that you cannot insure egg thorugh the postal system. You used to be able to, but there were too many claims and probally not profitable.

I agree with not labeling it anything as it will be a target for a good toss or drop by an unhappy mail sorter. Postmaster/mistresses are generally happy about their jobs, but the most sorters in the back room and conveyor belts are bored minimum wage employees.

I do like the idea of insuring it as a cake platter though. One thing I have noticed though is when I've gotten broken eggs they leaked outside and soaked the box, so that would probally make them suspicious of it not being a cake platter, unless it had a jello cake on it

Would wrapping the egg carton in a plastic grocery bag work to keep broken eggs from soaking the box? or would it create problem with the egg not being able to breath and sweat?

Unfortunately, all this makes it sound like, "Hey, do you lack integrity? Do you try your best to do haphazard, sloppy work and take out all your frustrations on your innocent customers? Then, apply at your local P.O.! We can accomodate your every nasty mood!". :thun

I think it's best to assume the box will be dropped, kicked, shaken, and generally abused and package eggs accordingly.

Just before Christmas, there was tidbit on the news about packaging 'fragile' holiday gifts for shipping.
Something was said to the effect that if the packaging isn't sufficient to withstand the box being dropped onto concrete from a height of 3' --- then your 'fragile' item isn't packaged well enough.

I think that would apply year-round to packaging eggs.

Happy Holidays!

Well, you know how I pack my eggs, Lisa. We both do pretty good on that, but the problem with eggs is that they can be damaged, even if they are not actually broken or the box crushed. I guess we just have to acknowledge that we are doing a Las Vegas-type roll of the dice when we ship or receive eggs through the mail.

I wonder what would happen if we marked the boxes "Please Abuse This Box" or "Please Smash Me"? No, wait, I know "Hey, Mr. Irresponsible Postal Worker, Could You Possibly Do Your Job and Take Special Care of this FRAGILE Package? Thank You Very Much!! PS - Since I Pay Your Salary, I Have a Right to Expect You to Comply!"

Ok, realistically, I guess we're stuck with unmarked packages!!

Guess I am lucky.
I use the trifold egg cartons and they protect the egg.
Most of the people I send eggs to have decent hatches.

I mark all my boxes Fragile Real Hatching Eggs.

I wonder if some workers are just jerks and when they read the word eggs
they asume we are bull sh*ting them and they toos the box.
