I have used Red Cell in my silkies for years now and have never had a problem. I mix about one tablespoon if even that much in five gallons where the water looks to have just a bit of a yellow tint to it but nothing strong. I never lost a bird from it and have raised numerous chicks on it as well when they were a few weeks of age and older. I today had a post to a person on a facebook post where her bird was a little under the weather. I suggested using red cell and was flamed by a lady who totally disagreed with it stating it would cause toxic poisoning from too much iron to the birds if you use it. Well, I get it if you would use a large amount but a couple of teaspoons in five gallons of water is not strong at all. Just my opinion though. I have had great results with it and will continue to use it!
