I use the plastic Easter eggs, too. Mine are pink camo colored. Apparantly chickens don't notice color. They sure look neat in the boxes next to brown and green eggs. lol

Maybe it's because I think I would like my own privacy while doing what they do.

I put golf balls in all of my boxes this morning. Sure wish I could tell when these gals will be ready. I've heard a few different things...they turn red on their combs and faces, they squat. Well, has anyone had a gal start laying with having done either one of those things? I have a girl that was hatched at the end of April. Yes, she has a red face, sometimes. I've heard it called blushing.? When she gets excited her whole face lights up. Her little pea comb is starting to turn more red and stay that way, but I have a faverolle that is younger by two months, and has a comb that is a lot more pink than hers. ????

Also have a Spangled Russian Orloff who has a more pink comb now.
Anyone want to share at to how old their pullets started to lay? And the breed?

I started out with plastic Easter Eggs, filled with sand and glued shut. I wanted eggs that were NOTHING like what I would get from any of my pullets... because I didn't want to fake MYSELF out.

Bright yellow, bright red and vibrant pink eggs.

There was an egg eater in the flock, and she managed to get one or two plastic eggs out of the coops entirely, and then broken open.

So I scavenged up some golf balls. One of which is yellow. Two others have writing on them (given as gifts for my dogs, who don't like playing with golf balls) and I try to keep one in each nest.

Sure is amazing how they get moved around from nest to nest. Periodically I redistribute them, one to each nest, again.

The ONLY nest boxes I do not have them in are the built-in rollaway nest boxes, but four of my eight current layers use those nest boxes anyway.

Ya... i did that... But then they started getting a better game than me... NO FAIR!!! I had to take the clubs away or I wouldn't stand a chance of getting another Birdie!!! ha ha... (ok.. totally cheezy)

I have a golf ball and some wooden fake eggs. If I'm not here to gather the eggs, my husband collects all the eggs including the wooden ones. Then I get a "I thought that egg looked strange". At least he doesn't collect the golf ball.

I use ping pong balls. They were handy. And they work fine too. I was told to put a fish hook inside with a string attached and tie the string to the chicken wire if you had a snake problem. It would catch the theif and hang him on the wall till you came out to get him. Have not tried it but thought it pretty clever.
