help. i am trying to preset temp in bator and i cant seem to get a accurate reading from my spot check therm. temps are 98 to 101 hova with fan, what am i doing wrong. my untrusted thermometer says around 99.5 but its jumping in temp temp also. someone please help.

I don't know what you are doing wrong, both my Spot Checks are spot on accurate.

it may be right on, but why does it measure 98 to 101 up and down not just one temp for any length of time. my walmart cheapo says 99.5 spot check keeps going up and down.

How old is the battery, it may be getting old they are only good for 6 weeks continue run, maybe not that but worth checking out.

It is very sensitive to changes. What I was seeing was the light would come on and the temp rise to 100.8 and when it went off it would drop down to 99.4 or so. Just make sure you are measuring temps at the level of the eggs. The cheap thermometers are not as sensitive and do not update as often as the Spot Check.

thats it. light on ,light off. temp goes up and down. how do you set it. with a range of 98 to 101 it reads constant temp changes, all the others are minutes behind. therefore temp swings are not not noticed. i am just trying to preset the temp for a hatch. my cheapo springfield says 99.3 to 99.5 i am going to find a water wiggle today and try that on the end of the probe

It reads minute changes as they happen. You need to stand and watch when it starts going up and when it starts coming down. That will give you the average. It does not act like the household ones, which are not nearly as sensitive and won't read a high temp until way after it happens and by then, the temp may not be as high as it was when it registered. I love my Spot Check, but you have to get used to the accuracy! Sounds like your temp is good, in between the two extremes, so I wouldn't worry about the wiggler.

I would suggest returning it as defective. Mine gives perfect readings. You cannot move the tip around too much or touch any eggs with it or even the sides of the incubator. I have 3 different thermometers and always trust the Brinsea.
