That's how my geese are, i have 3 ponds and 2 freshwater canals on my place and they prefer to stay in the muddy ditch or up by the house.

Maybe if you put a few decoys out there. Also, places to hide from predators. Just like kids in that they don't care about the toy, they like the box it came in.

You are lucky. My husband doesn't want a pond even thought I want one.. I guess after seeing this pic I might just stick with my kiddie pool.
