I live about 6 miles from a Federal Prison, and they house women inmates there as well as men. A very dear friend of mine, is a minister, and has a choir and ministers to these women there on a weekly basis. 95% of these women are in prison because of a man, no argument there, and they have a dog care program for the dogs that are used for seeing eye, and helping hands for people in wheel chairs and the like. The sefl-esteem boost these puppies give these women are tremendous, and gives them something to think about other than their sad state of affairs. A lot of them find out they really love working with animals, and make plans to do something construstive about it when they get out, instead of destructive. I think its one of the best things they can do; and I don't mean a murderer or a molester or anyone of those. Anyone who sees and reads my posts on here knows I would be a hangin' judge or juror, but we need to help some of these minor infraction inmates instead of punishing them for the rest of their lives. Most of these women have children waiting for them when they get out; and if there is one thing they do while incarcerated that makes them WANT to further their education and be able to function in society and be productive, then it should be encouraged. Ok, I'm done.

It's a win-win situation. The dogs needs rescuing/rehabbing and adoption out to a forever home. The inmates get a positive focus that could potentially help them in many ways.

Spoken from a woman that has a Pibble in her lap. (Otis doesn't know he's a pit bull, so we tell him he's a pibble)

what i worry about is..well..if they are inmates that had hurt people in their crimes...
what would they do to the animals? Thats all i worry about..
but they must be watched 24/7 with them, correct??

I actually watched a documentary on this the other night. The men/women selected for the programs have to apply for these programs and they are really scrutinized, in order to be approved. What I got out of it was that the inmates get a sense of purpose and the opportunity to learn to think about more than just their own needs and survival. It was also interesting to see how the other non-participating inmates reacted to the dogs. The hardest looking criminals rolling sitting with these dogs and letting them lick their faces. IMO, I think if more of these inmates had had the opportunity to have a healthy relationship with an animal early on, there wouldn't be so many of them now.

Forgot to say, yes I watch the show.

I'll have to tell that to Mica next time she looks all pathetic until I let her curl up next to me. Can't sit on the couch without my 'heat-seaking-pibble' at my side. She's extremely hedonistic, like a cat.
