I'm curious to know where you got your Welsummer from......I'm looking for some terra-cotta and hopefully speckled eggs for my basket. Not up to incubating and ending up with roosters and pullets, so I'm restricting myself to a hatchery.

Thanks for your input!

Mine aren't here yet, but I ordered a couple from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio, to arrive in May. I ordered an assorted mix in hopes of many egg colors. These will be our first chickens!

After repeated attempts to hatch wellies, I kept ending up with all roosters. I have 2 girls from a BYCer, but I ordered 4 more from Meyer (MPC) to even the roo ratio a bit. I'd check the Welsummer thread- from what I remember Meyer has decent ones. And you can order just a few.

Thanks---if anyone has pictures of Meyer Welsummer eggs, I would love to see them.

And, good luck with your first chickens! I started with only 3.....and I thought I might go up to 4. Now I have 8 and 8 chicks in my office. It's a tad addictive.

I got mine from MyPetChicken, but only because I was needing sexed banties. I think theirs come from Meyer anyway.

My two have great personalities and have been consistant layers. Their eggs are a nice deep brown with some speckles. I have tons of pics on my blog if you don't mind going back a few pages. The most recent stuff is mostly silkies and ameraucanas.

Good luck! Welsummers are great!

My welsummers are hatchery welsummers, but I'm afraid I don't know which hatchery. I got them from a woman who got them from a local feed store.

The quality of the eggs is lovely, they are indeed a dark terracotta brown, and often speckled. But. My welsummers have terrible personalities. They are mean, very aggressive toward other chickens and toward me. I cannot turn my back on them. None of my other chickens (mostly hatchery stock) have this problem and I'm told this is not at all typical of the breed, so I'm planning to put mine in the pot this year and get some better quality birds to replace them.

I have some from Ideal. The older ones I got from them were definitely more typey than the ones I've got in recent years. They aren't my friendliest birds but they are some of the prettiest. Even my sport one who is a light mahogany. None are mean, they just don't want to be held. But then most chickens don't.

The eggs aren't what you'd get from breeder birds but they aren't your average brown eggs either. They are a light terra cotta color and most have speckles.

These aren't great pictures, but they are the best I could find. The eggs are actually darker than they appear in the photo.

The wellie egg is the third from the left. The first is a white polish egg, the second a beige buff orp egg, the third is the welsummer egg and the fourth a green EE egg.

Hope this helps!

I have two Welsummers that I got from my local feed store, so I dont know what hatchery they came from, but the hen does indeed lay the most beautiful dark brown eggs. She doesnt lay terribly well, though... just through the summer. She is also rather flighty and skittish, but not mean. The rooster on the other hand, well, he is very protective! And he does sometimes get people aggressive, but I keep him anyways, because he is such a good guard for his hens. I am also hoping to get a few more this spring, just for those eggs! Im interested in what hatchery has good layers too- let me know if you find out anything good!
