My question is probaly a stuipd one.
But here goes.
When you go buy a thermontor to use.
Do you put it in the bator or just the cord?
Husband say's just the cord.

Depends on the thermometer. Im assuming by your question you are referring to a digital thermometer with a remote probe.
In that case, just the probe goes in the chamber.

If you are using a bulb or discrete thermometer, like a childrens model, then the whole thing goes in the chamber.

However, no matter which you use, place the sensing section of the the thermometer in a water weasel. Heres a link to explain this:

But dont buy one frome these guys. $12 is too much. Sorry.
Get one from WalMart or the toy store for $1. Youll find them in the toy section next to the the liquid bubbles and stuff.

You can also make a good one from a ziplock baggie. Fill it partially with water and squeeze all the air out as you seal it. Then roll it into a ball, about the size of an egg, and wrap a rubber band around it.

The point of all this is to simulate an egg in the chamber, so you monitor the actual temp of the egg and not the air temp itself.
Air temps in small incubators can be widely variable, and are rarely close to the actual temperature of the egg.

Yeah I was talking about a digatal. With in and out temps and humidity.
Got it at Home Depot about 12 dollars.
So what your saying is just the probe or cord goes in.
I had the whole thing in there and only got a 50% hatch. (chick)
Got 0 for my pheasants.
So I'll try again with the cord only in the bator.

Thanks for your help:clap

Let me add a caveat here, Dottie: Those all-in-one weather units are suspect in my opinion. Some seem to work okay, others are bollox. This is especially so for the hygrometer portion, but Ive heard of problems with the thermometer section, too.

Ive condemned mine for use on the incubator.

I would highly recommend you get a remote probe digital thermometer and a separate hygrometer. Look them up on ebay and you will find them both plentiful and cheap. I use a thermometer made for aquariums and a hygrometer intended for cigar humidors, of all things.

Between them, I think I paid more for shipping than for the items!
