I would still humbly recommend the Earthsea series as a good 'young adult' or teenager coming of age story. It is a bit older, but the story is deep and engaging. Ursula K LeGuin writes some real thinkers, especially in her Hainish cycle, often cited as among the great works of science fiction.

Here is the first book, A Wizard of Earthsea.

I'll have to check it out! Hey, while we're recommending books, 'Down the Mysterly River' is a must-read. It literally made me laugh and cry.
