Can I put something in their waterers to prevent them from freezing so quickly. Maybe some Apple Cider Vinegar or maybe even a little rum

Might help shake off the cold as well!

I dont think there are any additives you can add, but maybe someone else knows of one? Apple cider is good for them, but wont stop water from freezing.

You could try a heated dog water dish, if you can run power to the watering station. There are heated poultry waterers too.

I haven't heard of anything you can add (besides heat). I was wishing the other day that there was something though. Lugging the waterers in and out is getting really old (we have no elec. out there).

i've been told glycerine, like you get in the cake baking section(they use it to keep frosting soft) makes it freeze at a lower temp, hasn't helped here when it hits negative temps though

I use the Fortex black rubber bowls (from the feed store). You turn them upside down, step on it firmly, and the ice slides right out. They are also available online.

I bring water out to the girls in the morning in a gallon jug (warm water) and twice a day when it is super cold.

I start my flock's day with warm water with a tsp. of molasses per gallon. The molasses is good for them and seems to slow the freezing process a bit. I also use a black tub in addition to their waterers for my ducks. Which takes longer to freeze and as mentioned, is easy to get the ice out of.
