App to identify edible bugs, caterpillars, etc. ?

Standing in the rain trying to ID a caterpillar for my flock. All the apps were pay-to-play. I might have given them a try, but not with the rain coming down on me and my phone. Scrolling through websites even more unwieldy.

Is there a good app to vet possible (edible) meals for our girls?

I've seen chickens eat slugs. I've also seen chickens that won't touch them.

I can't decide if it's because of individual preferences, or if you really need one bold chicken to try eating slugs, and after that the rest copy them.

I've known some chickens to be fussy and only eat certain species (or colour or ? Not sure how they decided!) of slug.

You don't need an app. Your girls are the best assessors of what is edible to your girls. Their senses have been refined over millions of years of evolution to discriminate between the edible and the inedible. Those who got it wrong aren't here anymore and probably did not successfully reproduce their genes.

I've wondered that about cashews. Deadly, raw. Boil them and they're delicious. The ones we buy called "raw" are just unsalted. Imagine watching someone eat those and die a hideous death, then thinking, Hmm. Maybe we should boil these suckers ...
