According to my deed, not my town. I'm not quite sure what, if anything, to do about that. I'm surrounded by people with backyard flocks, so I don't think anyone will ever think to call me on it (if they ever care to look into it that far). None of my neighbors seem to care that I have them, either.

Hmm... Maybe this is one of those "don't ask, dont tell" type situations?

Are you in a deed restricted neighborhood? If so, probably not much you can do unless you get everyone on board to change things.
Hope you figure out a way to change it...or at least stay under the radar!

If you're surrounded my backyard flocks, I wouldn't worry about it. I wouldn't get a rooster though, why call attention to yourself, if you know what I mean.

If your outside of town, where most everyone owns around an acre or so...shouldnt be a big deal. I had a deed restriction in Ohio and owned 3 acres. Deed said you had to have 10 acres to own fowl, but all my neighbors were ok with it....even got some themselves. My deed was controlled by the township....if thats the case you could go to a township meeting and chit chat with some of the members. I would not get a rooster as someone else already posted...they draw way to much attention!

I *think* the restriction is just for my property, but in the interest of not calling attention to anything- I'm not exactly in a big hurry to check with the rest of the neighborhood. I HAVE asked about my rooster being a nuisance, tho, and have been told that people are so used to the other 4 in the immediate area that one more doesn't make a difference!

In some cases deed restrictions are time limited and expire. For example in my parent's neighborhood there is (was) a deed restriction that garage doors could not opn to the front of the property, but must open to the side or back. That restriction expired after 20 or 25 years. All the properties are built now, so unless one is torn down and rebuilt, it doesn;t really matter, and if one IS torn down and rebuilt, the garage can open to the front.

In your case, you can call whoever deals with deed restrictions and ask some geeric questions such as whether deed restrictions are time limited or not, and how to determine if they are. You should also look into your zoning and its permitted uses.
