Trying to how much give week old baby chicks. I have a 32 ounce container. I have read to give one fourth a cup to one gallon of water. I am so stumped. I tried to figure this out over an hour and can't grasp it. I need help. My young ones have pasting. I have read that Apple Cider Vinegar with mother helps to prevent this. I know to wash it off gently if pasting occurs. Please help me. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Maybe someone will answer this for you, but a lot of times that is caused by the brooder being to hot. What is the temp of your brooder and how do you have it set-up???? While you are waiting.

These are first week chickens. I'm trying to keep my brooder around 90 degrees for the first week. I have them in a metal stock tank. I've used a stock tank for a brooder for the last 3 groups of chickens that I have raised. For some reason this time has been the most difficult. The temp flucuates from 95 to 83 being the lowest. I go out and check on the chicks and temp every half hour. During the day.
The brooder is in the garage . I use one heat lamp during the day. I have two in the tank. The temp at night flcuates between 50's and 60's during the night. It's in the 80's by the afternoon. Most of the day I can keep the temp at 89 degrees. I have always tried to go by the book. But this year I'm paying more attention to how the chicks behave. Like I have noticed if the temp gets 93 degrees or above. The chicks seem to be a little sluggish. At 89 degrees they are all over the brooder. More awake and active. I have them on starter and grower chick feed. I have read on BYC site here about ACV. So that is why I am trying it.How often should you check your chicks for pasting? I use pine chips in the brooder. Any ideas would be of great interest to me. Thank you for your time.

I put one cap full in mind. Worked great.

128 ounces in a gallon. you have a 1 quart container. you need a quarter of a quarter cup.
16 tablespoons in a cup. 4 tablespoons of vinegar to a gallon, so 1 tablespoon to a quart.

You need 1 tablespoon in your water container from your instructions..

It need not be exact. I put a splash in my one quart and now put a good pour or 2 glugs in the new waterer.

chicks do not have to be held at 90F.
I set my brooder hood at 80F about 5 years ago and that is where it stays. I have a large brooder area where the chicks can get away from the heat. they are out from under the brooder hood more than they are in.
when a hen leads her chicks out to forage, I have seen them happily running around in 50F weather. they go under mama every once in awhile and then go back "outside"..

32 ounces is a quart.
1/4th of a gallon.
1 Tablespoon to a quart.

It is not that critical. that is, 2 tablespoons wouldn't hurt them..

As stated----you don't want the whole brooder heated----only one end is best----about the size of a plate----kinda like a mother hen would be-----if you have only a few chicks. Some people make the mistake of heating the whole brooder with big heat lamps-----that leads to problems. Duplicate a mother hen on one end(lower wattage bulb, I rarely use over a 60 watt bulb but use 40 watts most---checking the temp "under the light"---raise or lower the light to get to the temp area you want. 90 is good for 1 week old, Always have food and water towards the other end----chicks do better to drink unheated water so do not have it close to the heated end.
