So having some backup redundancy for your media is important if the grid ever goes down.

That said, I'm not a big time Apple user, and was wondering if anyone has any backup methods for iPhones, iPads, etc that will allow you to play the live photos, and prevent videos from failing to convert to Windows or Linux?

For example I get a number of videos when transfering from an iPhone that require a codec, which to me doesn't make much sense as the other videos taken right along side them open just fine.

Any Apple users or tech people that can chime in on this phenomena?

Live photos are a Apple specific thing. As far as I know there is nothing to view those on Linux.

For the codec thing, on Windows install VLC for the codecs. On Linux, I install both VLC and MPV, VLC to get the codec, MPV to play back the high efficiency video. That codec will not work on devices that don't have the right decoder.

I hadn't thought of VLC, I reloaded Windows a while back and used to have it. Good to hear it will take care of those codecs because I wasn't about to buy them from the MS store and just wasn't feeling the desire to search up where to find them so I'll give it a shot.

It's just odd that transfering the same group of videos and certain ones won't play. Too bad about the Live photos.

Maybe I should look at getting an Apple drive.

Supposedly the Live Photos are stored as video files but I could be wrong. I'd have to check my device and see.

What exactly do you mean by Apple drive?

I use Immich as a local photo backup solution but you'll want a dedicated computer with hard drive and some terminal experience for that.

Yeah I just assume Apple make external drives.
