Mine didn't know what to do with it at first, which was equally funny watching the suspicious looks..

I broke a piece off a couple of them and sprinkled it on the ground....THEN they caught on! All of our apples had stems, so it was easy to tie the string to.

Just be careful that the strings are VERY secure and that they are strong. We had a chicken come into our ER clinic with a string hanging out of it's mouth, that went all the way through it's crop. I don't think the bird survived. It was also used to hang treats...

I think I will try using a strong wire to hang them - so I don't have to be afraid of the dummies strangling themselves

Or chains.

There was a bait ball that you can put in cabbage and whats not in the bowl and you can hang it on a shepherd's garden hook in the run. Works well for suet hangers too.

that sounds like a good idea - i have tons of chains in my house from when i was working on the coop doors - i may ahve to try that
