lol no kidding...mine are terrified still of a plum and a pile of mowed grass I threw in the run yesterday. They all cowered in the corner and glared at it

Apparently it's gonna eat them!!

I went out to check this afternoon and half the apple was gone... however, if it's the red side up their still leery of it... if it's the fleshy side (i cut them in half) they're ok. Glad to be able to intro another healthy food item.... hhhmm, just like with human babies

First time I tossed BOSS in the run they ran away and eyeballed it to be sure it wasn't going to attack them. Now, when they see me coming with the BOSS they ATTACK me.

Good idea about the apples. Thanks for bringing that up.

About a hundred years ago I lived in S. CA and had about a dozen hens. They spent most of their time in the back of my property which had a garden and several fruit trees. One morning I came out and saw that all of them had large purple splotches on their wattles and even their combs. This was well over 25 years ago, long before the internet was a handy tool to find answers to almost anything. I called people, read my books and worried until I realized that they were eating the tons of ripe plums that had fallen from the trees. They were equally fond of the oranges, and of course anything in the garden they could get to. And they would run down adult mice and have them for dessert.

Had to add -- if you're going on a trip, half a watermelon rind can be a perfect extra waterer! Ours still had some red part on it, and we filled it up with water. When we returned, the melon was empty and picked clean!
