April 2023 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Its started, turkeys eggs are on lockdown. i did one last candle and two look like they might be working on the inner membrane or whatever its called. The majority of them I can see half their body poking into the air pocket, which for me has always been a good sign. And the remaining 2/3 are moving but appear to be slightly behind. It's only day 26 though so I'll give them time.

Ooo~ This is so exciting! Praying all goes well as this is my first time using this incubator and I truly believe it's a good one. I've never had a good hatch so if all goes well I'll be very pleased. I have no trust in my old cheap one and regret ever trying to use it.

Last chick hatched last night at around 9:30. Always one that is a little behind the 8 ball, but I'm not complaining. Got 11 out of 12 eggs to hatch with healthy fluffy little fuzzy butts now occupying my temporary brooder in the bathroom. Egg #12 was clear.

It's looking like by all the little chipmunks that the Black Breasted Red OEGB chicks are out numbering the pure bred Silver Duck Wings. How that happened I dunno as all of my roosters are SDWs and BBR hens are in the minority. Maybe some cross bred? Time will tell. Just hoping there are some pullets in the bunch.

I will! You'll have to update too! I know the breeder you got yours from is working on cuckoo so that wouldn't be too out of the question, I'm not sure if they have it in all their pens or not though.
Yeah, she actually is the one that helped me figure out it was a Watermaal 🙃 Here they are at 2 weeks!

Today is the last day of hatch, one yellow out of a blue egg, 3 pips. and a few more eggs not doing anything. I have a friend coming today for 2-3 of the day old chicks, (she is getting some from a feed store, plus these.)

One was droopy last night, but I gave it yolk water. I didn't expect it to make it over night, but now it is perky! Yeah yolk water!

Introducing Splat! Yesterday the egg had stalled during zipping so last night I removed the egg from the incubator and set it on a towel on the counter top and worked on helping the poult stuck inside to progress. Using a wet q-tip, I soften and remove the hard, crusty membrane that stuck fast to his wing. Then I carefully cracked the shell about 2/3rds along the natural zip line, freeing a toe so he could get a foothold against the shell to work himself free (it's always best to let the chick work itself free vs you pulling the egg away from the chick). I turned slightly, just for a fraction of a second to throw the q-tip in the waste bin, and heard a loud "Splat!" This little turkey poult had, in that split second, pushed himself out of his egg with such force it propelled him completely the counter and onto the floor! My heart sank as I was so sure the 30" fall onto cold hard tile had killed him. But, no...I carefully picked him up to find him alive, so I popped him back into the incubator, hoping he wasn't mortally injured. He's perfectly fine. He name is fitting, don't you think? 😁🥰
