April 2023 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Buffy 2.0 has been zipping for hours, how long is too long? Part of the membrane that was on some paper toweling looks a bit yellowed. She’s still peeping away, I’ve just never had one take this long!

They can take a long time… but personally if I’m not worried about dropping humidity on other eggs I don’t hesitate much help a chick that’s taking a long time to zip.

There’s only the two eggs and the second hasn’t pipped yet. I know they say 24 hours from pip isn’t a worry, but I wasn’t sure if zipping was different. Thanks for the insight!

Zipping is different to me. If a chick is zipping it means it is all absorbed and trying to get out. Since your other egg hasn’t pipped you could grab the zipping one and inspect. You can see if the membrane is too thick and giving it problems. If your lucky it will hatch in your hand 😀

I should add that if I help out at all with zipping stage I just help them ‘loosen the lid’ so to speak. Then put them back and let them finish up kicking out of the shell.

Oh that would be amazing! I’d probably be so excited and drop the wee thing lol.

That’s what my initial feel for helping was, just take the little lid off a bit so it can push out properly on its own

It is actually quite beneficial for a chick to push out on its own. They start using leg muscles. It's tiring but good for them 🙂
I'm also really tempted to help 😅

zipping shouldn't take long at all. If it takes over an hour then I help. Most of mine do it in under 30 min.
I swear I’ve read this before and I am just finding info on pipping tonight 😩 I quickly just popped the cap off and everything felt so crispy, but I’ve never felt the hatching egg before 🤷🏽‍♀️ She was drying off in the line that was exposed (the feathers)
