APRIL 26TH, TSC MILFORD NH CHICKEN SWAP:

Well, I'm the idiot newbie who was asking for help this morning...bought a laying EE and a Barred Rock and also a tractor coop from Janet's husband (that's the right name, right?)....

Anyway, we got home, got settled in, the girls were pecking away as happy as they could be and then my 17 yr old son let my dogs out (a Bichon and her daughter). The 10 lb daughter scared the (*&(* out of the EE, who flew over my chain link fence. I've been searching for more than 1 1/2 hours and can't find her. My backyard has woods around it, and then a lake, neighbors too, eventually.

Is there any chance she'll come back? Is there anything I can do? I posted in "Managing Your Flock" too, but since I actually talked to some of you today, I thought I'd post here. Also, should worst come to worst, I'm hoping someone local will sell me a laying hen later in the week after my coop and run arive!!! (pretty please!)-Gail

Oh, that was a gorgeous EE pullet

Other than luring her with food, I have no idea. Perhaps she'll hear the other chicken?

I came home with 3 Welsummer chicks. Little tiny 1 weekish things. I picked the dark ones with V's on their heads, hope I got girls!

hi, i am the one who sold them to you, the barred rock and ee have been together free ranging here, and its hot and stressful, i would wait til dusk, and go looking in trees if worse comes to worse, it will be cooler then. but her running crazy scared isnt good in this heat, but i am not helping any! sorry/

was a great swap my BR's went fast and I managed to not bring any new chicks home. I did however get a awesome new brooder and they love it and so do the kids they can see the chicks much better without climbing on chairs. Proud to say the coop and run are almost finished but I gotta work tonight so now I have to sleep. Thanks for the great kid free time!!

Had a great time, despite it getting hot so fast.

Twins I have four of the ones you sent left and the four you had me pick up. Will be there with them in a bit. They are all fine. Getting water and such.

Well the ladies are settled in, and I am sooo happy to have them! They seem to be loving their new home and they are quietly pecking away and bathing in the dirt!

I am trying to post a picture, so I hope that worked.

My dog, Brandi, really loves them, maybe too much, so they are not allowed to meet right now. They definately aren't scared of her though.

And, their new coop! We've never built anything before, so it's a little rustic, but we can always make alterations if we find things that just aren't working. So far, its working well!

So, thank you all for your help, advice, organizing the chicken swap, and of course, thank you, firedove for my adorible babies!

Oh, I forgot, I had one question. I would like to give them some kitchen scraps for treats. Is there anything that I CAN'T give them? I think probably not garlic or onions, but we usually collect all of our scraps for the compost pile together, so I need to know what to keep seperate. Coffee grounds? They probably shouldn't have caffeine I'm going to guess. What about citrus? We never put any animal products in the compost, except egg shells, so no meat or bones will be going in there. Thanks all!

I went to the swap today in Milford and ended up bringing home six chicks..I did however get to find homes for three of my hens...I just have too many eggs!
