well my cousin is over... is obsessed with my ducklings and chickens... who wouldn't love them... but she keeps asking me when they are going for a swim in the pond... if she can get them out of their brooding box every 5 minutes... holding them all the time... and i get told off by my auntie! for not letting her put the food in my chickens feeder. I said their MY chickens and ducklings... i like feeding them and locking them up... and she thinks i will get bored of them... NOT HAPPY

Congratulations to all of you getting chicks! So exciting! I love hearing about everyone's hatches.

I candled my eggs again yesterday, on the end of day eight. Lots of happy bouncing embryos! I love seeing the embryos moving--it's such a special and cool sight. I never tire of it. I was happy to see that the one duck egg I have in there seems to have bounced back from being cool for twelve hours (my broody abandoned it) and was doing quite a bit of moving around! I wish it had been a call duck egg under her instead of a rouen one, but oh well! Ducklings are adorable no matter what, so I won't complain.

How do I candle an egg? I have one egg that has not hatched yet, can I candle it? I am just wondering if it will hatch or not, everyone else has already hatched. Thanks

u buy a candling tool... generally a torch like thing with a nossle to suit the size of egg...

you should candle throughout the prcoess beginning on day 8 until around 4 days before hatching... this helps you to guestimate what the humidity needs to be and take out any dead embryos so as not to contaminate the incubator should it go rotten and explode...

I use a semi-powerful LED light my dad got from Costco, personally, and it does an fantastic job! I could even see toes moving around one time I candled.

i am new to this group and i have not been on the site in a long time.
I have a nice little flock of chickens here in Decatur Texas. I just put my first ever eggs in the bator today about 11am. there is 9 in there. so far temp is holding at 99.5

these are just some mixed eggs from my hens and roosters. Hatch day should be the 29th if things go well. This is my first ever hatch.

oh ok... thanks for sharing. My Dad has a powerful flash light like that. I will ask to borrow it to see if it works. Thanks!

Candling is best done in a dark room, with a powerful light held under the egg, and sometimes on top of the egg.
I use a projector(very bright light) under the egg, and a minimag light on the top of the egg, that seems to give me the best view.
