Hi, I am a new member and so happy to have found a group of fellow chicken lovers:) I have a hatch due on April 12th (getting so excited) and although I have had 3 successful hatches in the past, this is the first where we will be keeping the chicks (chicken keeping is new for us). Sofar things seem to be going well with the 18 little ones. We had a power outage this morning that gave me a few palpitations but it did not last long. I have 3 Americaunas, 10 Australorps, and 5 SL Wyandottes. I do have a question...In past hatches I have not candelled and have just left the eggs to their own, with pretty high success rates. Now that these are my coming home babies I seem a little more attached and have been reading more about the incubation process. I have candled and have a couple of the darker coloured eggs that are difficult to see. Reading about bacteria build up and eggs blowing up has me worried about the consequences of this happening and the bacteria getting onto the healthy viable eggs. Should I be concerned or just let this go and stop being such a nervous mama:/ ?Thanks

you would smell a rotten egg before it exploded... so you should have nothing to worry about

is it normal... for a duck egg that has internally pipped... to have a red... what i could describe as thick vein like bit... at the fat end of the egg?

i cannot get a picture as its on the under side of the egg... it looks a bit like a bruise around the area of it as it is peachy in colour... i can hear tapping from some of the eggs... dont know which one(s)

any ideas?

This is the nicest shipping wrap job I have ever seen... My goodness I have learned how to ship... This was beautiful!!!

I have turkey poults!!! My first 2 broody turkeys of the year have been cobrooding over 15 eggs. I thought they had about a week left, but apparently I lost track of time b/c I walked by today and saw little heads poking out! there were at least 8 that I could see, but I haven't picked up the hens to get a final count. Yay for turkey babies!!!
