Ok, so I need to keep more than a pitchfork near the coop! Oh my, what an experience for all! I know I'll have interesting dreams tonight too. Maybe the mom is having her own tramma, as she was no match for that snake. Natural instincts would tell her to run. She may have a hard time trusting that building again for a while.

Be sure to get the neck area clean to avoid infection & antibiotic ointment/cream is a good idea. It shouldn't be hard to give a "baby geeser" a bath, they love water anyway. That's an incredible picture to go with your story, unforgettable. Your like a "super hero." You must give us a followup story about the lucky one, MIRACLE.

Wow! What a story! Thanks for sharing, glad I don't have to worry about big snakes in the chicken coop, as far as I know!

Ok, the early chick is YELLING it's head off. Come on other chickies! You need to hatch on your due date to keep this guy company

Love all the chick pics btw

That is quite a story!!

I love seeing everyone's chicks!!! There are so many, and they are all so cute.

Unfortunantly we lost two babies today...the kids decided they needed water, put a waterer in and two fell in

My partner at work answered the phone, he was like "umm...I think this might be for you"...Poor little things were crying so hard.

So out of 20 eggs, we had 8 hatch...two are def goners, one was almost all the way out and then stopped, the other pipped had its little beak out of the membrane and then stopped. 10 are still in there, but I don't have a lot of hope. Not hearing any chirping.

Still the girls (and neighbor kids) are estatic, and we are going to set a dozen more banties this Sat, plus some mixed eggs for SIL from her flock.

While not a really great hatch rate, I am happy for our first try with an LG.

I have about 8 eggs that are duds, I think. We set 21 last Thursday and 13 have popped. Nothing new overnight, not even rocking and rolling.

I had one that was beginning to zip and then the rowdys banged it around something fierce. Since then, nothing out of it and it's been almost 24 hours. No more cracks or movement.

Makes me sad cause this was a big egg too. If nothing comes happens by 2 today, about 24 hours after the hatching of the youngest in the bator, I will steam the bath and begin transfer to the brooder of the 8 in the bator. Then I will candle the rest to see what's going on.

Part of me is looking for a miracle

for these unhatched chickies, but I'm afraid it's all over and they are quitters.

My update - this is my first hatch ever:

Started with 32 eggs... had to toss a few that were clear (of course, that left room in the incubator for a second batch which then led to a third, so I have a second Hovabator 1588 coming as a hatcher... okay guys, this is truly a sickness

At any rate, for the first batch (due to hatch on April 27th), I have 7 cochin/Ameraucana crosses that still don't look like anything is going on in the eggs, but I don't have the heart to throw them out. They are very thick shells and I am hoping maybe I'm missing something. I have 5 barred rock/ameraucana crosses (hoping for olive eggs), and 5 blue egg ameraucanas, and 4 pink egg ameraucanas/EEs... these total 14 that are alive and moving and doing well! I'm guessing those cochin crosses are probably duds.

Here was my starting pic (sorry if I shared this in this thread already, hoping I didn't).

I now have in there, 7 marans (shipped, and don't look like a dang thing is going on inside of them) and and 3 more EEs and 3 more cochin crosses and two slipped into that batch along with 2 polish/EE crosses which were an accident - I thought they were pink EE eggs cause it was late at night

. Those are due to hatch out the 30th. The third batch are 6 bearded cochins (assorted colors). These were shipped. I only had room in the bator for 6, and I was sent 12, so I slipped 6 under my broody silkie in the coop. She was thrilled

Which speaking of, there are at least 8 under her now, and 6 or so under the other broody silkie...

Just wanted to say - this started off with a "let's just hatch a couple eggs" to all this... what the heck?
