April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Today is Day 21! No pips yet. No rockin' 'n' rollin' yet, but since I had a power outage for 12 hours and they got chilled one night, I am not expecting anything until at least tomorrow, if at all actually.

Here's the breakdown of those that survived to lockdown:
2 Black Jersey Giants
4 Welsummers
5 BBS Cochins
9 Assorted Purebred
Also 8 Polish, which are 3 days behind, but in lockdown with the rest.

OMG ... just went to verify the numbers to put in this post and found one of the assorted purebreds has started to pip. Hasn't broken completely through yet, but definitely some effort going on! Yay!

go chicky, GO!
I hear that a lot! even people who have huge incubators say of there is something really important they need hatched it gos in the mini! Gah I know right? I've been watching one on eBay and its at 200 some odd $ right not and it still has a few days to go. .
yep.... I started saving for mine last year! haha

Day 17 for me. Candled last night. One for sure is alive. The other 2 are hard to tell. Hoping all 3 are alive. Lockdown is tomorrow!!!! So excited for this hatch. My first silver Amerucanas.

I am not even going to try to catch up on this thread...lol but instead just jump back in here. I had 8 CCL eggs shipped to me. (Paid for 6) All but one had detached air cells upon arrival. 1 infertile and 1 blood ring day 7 but 6 made it to lockdown and 4 hatched. 3 Boys and 1 girl. Super awesome hatch for shipped eggs from Cali to Indiana and bad air cells. Little miracles! I have some of my own Silkie's eggs hatching today:
This morning there were 2 chicks out and 8 pips- 1 is zipping right now.

(28 eggs in there). My other bator is full too (staggered hatch) with CCLs, Silkies and Porcelain D'uccles due to hatch 4/21, 4/25 and 5/1.

Need some quick help please ... it's Day 21, one egg is starting to pip. I suddenly noticed a rotten egg smell. Yikes. Do I open up the incubator and do a sniff test of the other 27 eggs so I can remove the culprit? I would hate to have one bad egg ruin the others. I assume I should cover the eggs with warm wet paper towels if and when I do the sniff test? Any words of wisdom.

Yep, this is my first hatch.

Get it out of there!! A rotten egg will be cracked from the pressure (not zipped, but cracked, like an egg that's dropped!) find it and get it out, the gases can kill the other chicks in the eggs! Get a space heater to heat up the area so you don't lose too much heat, but remember, momma hens get off the nest daily for a few minutes, so you should be ok if you work quick. Good luck!

Thanks! I have them in a small bathroom, so was able to retain a lot of the heat. Also turned the shower and sinks on hot to retain the humidity. Oddly enough I could not find a cracked egg and the sniff test was not conclusive. I left them all in for now, but will be sniffing periodically just in case. The potential culprit is the biggest egg in the bunch, so I will be able to grab and go if I think it really has gone rotten.

Good news is that the chick that is trying to pip is chirping inside the egg and when checking the other eggs saw numerous eggs with movement.

Thanks again for your quick advice. Really appreciate it!

Wouldnt that be too much humidity for the eggs? With the shower on?

I would like to know as this is also my first hatch

This thread is crazy came back to fine over 70 posts yikes!
Anyhow I only had 4 eggs in the bator and one has got a crack in it! OMG - I didn;t notice it until I turned it this morning now I am thinking what to do? Some folk say put Wax on the breach but hay it could have been like that from the start as one of the eggs was scrambled in the box and the other was so stuck to the packaging it broke so that is why we only have 4 now it looks like 3!!!!!! - I will have to candle it DARN!!!!!! I bet its gone bad no smell though but just my luck. If there is any sign of life in it I will doubtless try to wax the breach and hope but it doesn;t look good.

Oes

I'm guessing those were turned on just to get the room steamy so she could open the incubator without fear of shrink-wrapping any pipped chicks. I did that last week, worked great.
