what happens if i candle my eggs on day 19 ,and i already went into lockdown ?
You get to see them move

. Lockdown is so that when they pip, they have enough humidity in the air to allow them time to hatch out of their shells and not get stuck in the membranes. It is also the time for chicks to get into their hatching positions. If you do not have any chicks that have pipped, candling should not hurt them. Are you worried one is a dud or do you just want to see what they look like every day of 21 days? Candling is very educational.

If you candle the air cell, you might be able to see if a beak is sticking up in there if the chick has pipped internally (or you could just wait to hear the peeping). Others have posted pictures of what an internal pip looks like and I'm sure they had to candle during "lockdown" to get those pictures.

If you are worried that opening the box will lower the humidity, you can always dip a clean rag in warm water and put it into the incubator to help raise the humidity levels quickly. Or you could use a clean spray bottle and spritz the inside to keep the humidity levels up (not sure you should spritz the actual eggs though).

Goodluck with your hatch!

Chicken nr 4 hatched half an hour ago! To my big suprise he appears to be a buff orpington, although he came from an egg same size and color as the bantam cochin is laying. He does have a stripe of leg feathering so maybe he's a mix, but I would think the dark feather color would dominate the buff, and all the other three are different varieties of dark grey/black. Hmmm... Anyways, a totally gorgeous little one, but his navel not fully closed so keeping him/her in the bator until it's all nice and dry.

Well guys I have to tell you that here in my little incubator
There are NO LIZARDS>

Sadly there are NO fluffy chicks either. - this being Saterday night here we are way past hatch day now, it being Thursday day 21.
We are sitting Day 23 and counting. It would have been nice to even have gotten one out alive so we all could have played Guess what kind of chick it was? When I open the eggs for eggtopsy we will be sure they are chicks NOT lizards???? As I am certain one was growing in the fractured egg. Everything else I am sure has been wishful thinking on my part. - the mark on the egg might have always been there and I just didn;t notice. It was not the start of a pip. The tapping sound seems to be something to do with the mechanism of the light in the incubator not a chick eager for life.

Not a Pip to be seen yet. I guess I am getting nervous because I die not get a chance to candle before lockdown and the weather here keeps warming up sooooo I have to really watch temp.s. I hats to say they may have already been cooked and shrinkwrapped. (Sigh) I am praying that there are at least 1 or 2 resilient little babies that will get their booties out of those eggs! I think if I killed them all I shall just order day Ole's and take a break from hatching until someone goes broody.

Don't give up yet! With no pips it is safe ti try candling again. My first ever hatch didn't go until day twenty six. I was ready to give up but candled and saw movement so I waited a little longer.

I grabbed 2 random eggs and candles real quick 1 early quitter and 1 that appears to be a fully or nearly fully formed chick with visable viens as well, now I did not really see movement but veining should be a positive indicator I would think? Well off to google a million things about hatching.

Thank you both for the encouraging words!
