April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Thinking about making a hatcher...what do I need?

Check out this guys videos on Youtube: INCUBATOR I built 2 of these last year. First one was made for about $20 because I had most of the stuff laying around the house. Once I became a hatchaholic I decided to build the 2nd one and it cost around $60. I had to buy a cooler and I went with a wafer thermostat (those were around $40.) I now have a Sportsman that I use for days 1-18 and then use my cooler bators for hatching. They keep temp. and humidity perfectly. Even if they are unplugged for a while when I do plug them back in they jump to temp within minutes.

This is for anyone hatching during the month of April! I have 52 eggs dur April 6th: 6 Basque 10 Basque mix 12 Barred Orps 12 JG 12 Dark Cornish!
Is the Dark Cornish the green eggs? Or red? I'm interested as I have a Greeny blue egg and have no idea what it is. Only cause I thought it was an araucana but that was not on the list ? Only on day 4/5 so have to wait ages. Lol

Hi just wanted to join in I have 33 eggs in the bator. I also live in England. And they are due to hatch sat 20th. I have 12 that were shipped but pulled two of them out. The rest are home grown. Pure bred Self-Blue Cochin Bantams. And also a Nero cross Leghorn (I think it started with a rhode somewhere and they have a new name for it but can't remember.) the tail feather remind me of leghorns but black. And then I've gone and crossed them with my bantams. Should be interesting because of the dominant trait of Blues. Can't wait they are looking great so far. Here's a link. And this is my second time doing this after a complete flop last time round.

First, this post directly up above.... This looks like the same incubator I have. I see an extra thermometer, water bottle.... What are the little cup looking thing in the corner for? Any advice for me getting ready to hatch? I ordered an extra thermometer (hope it gets here in time). Do you turn your own eggs or does this do it for you?
You must have some really brave or plain stupid coyotes in GA. With you keeping danes and all. My danes are awesome as livestick guardian dogs. I haven't lost a bird to a hawk since we got Beau.

Since Beau (fawn male) got over 80lbs hawks don't even fly over if hes outside and Belle (BlueMerle Female) can claim 8 coons in her life. Coyotes are alot sneekier critters but Belle gave one a run for its life last winter when the varmit decided the creek behind the house had the makings of a cozy den. She was very proud of protecting her territory too when she came back she did the kick dirt behind her thing dogs do. Haven't seen a coyote except for on my trail camera since. I lost 4 brooding SLW hens in three days 2 years ago around this time of years to coons so now Belle and I try to put a dent in the varmit population throughout winter. Beau isn't gun shy hes just too much of a loverboy for all the barking and snarling that goes along with hunting coons so if he smells a coon on the creek he walks home and sits on the porch until we get back. Hes such a baby. No worries about the broodies at night around here this year.
I love love love Danes! And want one soooooo bad. Maybe if they are good with chickens the hubs will allow it. Right now I've got 3 rescued mutts. One lab mix who is awesome aside from his love of racing cars down the road, one no too smart Shepard mix pup, and one 17 year old golden retriever mix who has been the most wonderful companion, but obviously not getting around much these days...

Which would be easier...buying another incubator to hatch in or building a hatcher to hatch in? Ive already got 1 incubator but I want to keep eggs going all the time...one to incubate in one to hatch in...

What is y'alls thoughts??

Well, received my final box of eggs this morning. Yolk on outside of box. Inside box looked pristine, but 3 smashed eggs inside. What a mess. My question is this ...

They are Wheaten Marans eggs, so very dark and unable to see inside much at all. Couldn't find a single air sac because of their darkness. Plus, their shape is round at BOTH ends pretty much uniformly. Yikes! Which end is up? Since 3 were smashed I'm assuming they had a rough trip and need to chill out and not be turned for a few days after they've come to room temperature. But since I can't see the air sac and both ends are round, how do I position them?

Yes, newbie here!

TSC has Little Giant Still Airs for only $34 right now. Holds a lot of eggs. I doubt you can build one for cheaper, unless you have everything on hand already. I bought one of those to do my hatching in. Probably gonna go back and get another one for stand by.

Just set 30 this morning. My 3rd run at this. Now the wait till I candle on day 7.

I am planning on putting a few in the incubator today. Cross of barred rock over buff orpington and black sex link.
may have a few rir/araucana I just removed the seven I had in the bator because they were 3 days past hatch date. 3 of the ones I removed
weren't even developed and two were the size of a cherry and the last two were only the size if grapes. Don't know what happened, maybe it was too cold when I collected them. Hopefully the next batch will hatch.
