April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

No problem Hodgesk.. be careful getting chicks too. Some hens will accept them right away but some won't and will actually bully and/or kill the chicks so be careful with that. Plus, if you put them with her and she's in with the rest of the flock, even if she accepts them the flock mates may not. I would definitely suggest eggs the first time unless you know her to already be a hen that readily accepts babies that aren't hers? Just don't want ya to get them and then go down to check tomorrow morning and find six dead chicks in the coop. Ya know? Good luck with everything!

Donna is out, and 7 more are pipped. Day 20 just started! Apparently these little Basque chicks like to come a bit early :)

She is the only hen I have. I have one roo also. I am leaning more towards finding eggs to put under her, because if she rejects the chicks I don't have room to build another coop to raise them in. She was given to us by a family member, so I'm not sure how she reacts. I was just getting her used to me when she went broody. What is the best way to put the eggs in with her? I know to do it at night, but do I need to put them directly under her or just by her and she will arange them under her the way she wants them?

If she is broody for sure it probably don't matter.............
They are so funny....I set eggs in front of them and they quickly tuck the eggs under them.
Have faith in her instincts....much of what I have learned about chickens has been from watching them.
Good Luck and have fun with the experience

Am I joining to late? I have a mixed bag of 10 chicken eggs due 4/10. This will be my first incubator hatch. 10 out of 14 survived till now as far as I can tell. I had 2 clear and two early quitters, but the others seem good. I candled them today and found all viable! I will read and follow along. Good luck everybody!

Well said! I totally agree.

Always gotta have faith! I will decide whether to get chicks or eggs. I am not sure if she can go another 21 days being broody...of course I have to find out she doesn't have eggs under her 2 days before their supposed to hatch!! Thank you all for your advice!! I will let you know how it goes!

Whew!!! Just came in from being outside all day. Made a temp bigger house for my chicks..did a little rearranging. My chicks got to play in the sun, dirt and grass all day-they loved it!!! My silkies are the sweetest things ever!!

Setting another 12 eggs tomorrow. Got my two extra bators to use for hatchets today. I saw this kit the other day to make soda bottles into drinking bottles, got 3 kits made water bottles for the big flock, I will make more when we have more soda bottles. I taught my chicks and silkies how to drink from water bottles, much more sanitary. My big flock caught on very quickly!! I feel so much better that they will have water at all times now.

I'm loving this wonderful weather ...had such a good day. Ready for tomorrow, hmmm wonder what I can get into....;)
How did you make these. I would love to know. I use large rabbit water bottles
