April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Hatch day is tomorrow and/or Friday, and so far I THINK I've seen one egg taking a little roll. Has me a bit concerned, but truthfully the 5 that hatched last week did not do much rockin' & rollin' before they leaped forward into the world.

I do have one that is a definite maybe, too, as I dropped the **** thing while putting into the lockdown incubator. Completely crushed it, but there was obviously a viable chick inside and the membrane held it together even with the crushed shell all over. I wrapped a warm, moist paper towel around it and put it right next to the bowl of water. Have had to re-dampen the towel twice, but I could swear there is some breathing or mini-movement going on inside. It will be a true miracle if it survives to hatching. (Not much to hatch, as the shell is truly completely useless at this point.) Keeping a nose out, just in case it goes south quickly.

It's not quite as exciting as the first hatch, but still looking forward to perhaps a few new peeps - Light Sussex, Silver Plymouth Rocks, Wheaten Marans, and a couple of Mottled Houdans. I am feeling much more serious about this hatching business this time around. That new excitement from the first time when I hatched out 5 has transformed into not wanting to lose a single one this time. I know that's virtually impossible with LG Still Air, but still hoping.

Congrats on all the successful hatches and condolences for those of you who didn't get the results you were hoping for.

Gooooooo Babies!

My eggs are on day 19 in the LG still air. I have the radio playing next to the bator and it is my hope that I will walk in and see chicks all out and happy...Does that ever happen?

I set 36 eggs and 11 still seem viable. There are 17 in the bator but I don't have much hope for 6 of them. Interestingly enough, the majority of the ones that are still good were shipped. The ones from my hens were largely clear.

Unless I get a Brinsea I doubt I will hatch again. Maybe that's the stress talking and maybe I will feel differently once the hatch is over but I get sad when an egg that had a dancing embryo shows no sign of life a few days later.

WOW! I hope the dropped egg hatches! That's one tough bird!

It does feel quite discouraging to only get a few to hatch, that's for sure. I keep thinking though, that if I splurge and get an incubator that is all self-sufficient, instead of the basic LG, then will I feel the way I do about hatching? I'm sort of one of those crazy people who feels happy to successfully do something that is quite hard. Plug it in and check back in 21 days doesn't hold as much interest for me.

Although the chicks would probably beg to differ with me!

Good luck with your hatching!

Good luck with yours too

Due tomorrow night day 21 - UGH! / through Friday.

Oes - nothing happening yet!

That's a good and really valid point...I bet you never cheated on a test either. A Brinsea WOULD feel a little like cheating
and not like you competing against the odds.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Our hatch is done! Out of 12 eggs, 11 were fertile and went into lockdown. Of those 11 I got 3 Black Copper Marans, 2 Blue Copper Marans and 4 Olive Eggers (Ameraucana/Marans). So 9/12 is pretty good for my 2nd hatch!

I'll post pics soon, once they've all fluffed up. One little chick took almost 48 hours to hatch!

TheCrazyChick~ I cracked one of my eggs on accident on day 18. I sealed it with wax and it hatched! It is a little smaller then the rest but sweet and healthy.
