Aquaponics

I'd considered moving the female and babies but I don't have any place to put them. If I put them in the aquarium in the house she'll probably eat most of the small fish in there and the plants not to mention being a terror to anything she doesn't eat. I'll see if I can figure out how to isolate her and the fry in one corner of the AP tank at least until the fry are larger and I can safely put them into the aquarium to grow.

I'd wanted to have a bunch of goldfish in our tank to help up the nutrient levels but every time I put any in there the bass and large perch eat them right up.
I've seen people use inverted milk crates for their fry. The holes let the fry swim in but the bigger fish can't get in and eat them.

That is a great idea !!! you could also use some plastic hardware cloth and zip ties make a hiding place.

Finally got some time to do some cleaning in the beds yesterday. The tomato plants have almost all been pulled and tossed and all that was really left was some broccoli that was planted for fun in the spring that never really did anything other than attract some strange looking worms. I pulled the broccoli and tossed it as well after I removed the worms and fed them to the fish. Then I swept the leaves out of the beds and took a rake to them to aerate them a bit (still need to install the solids settling tanks) and did some other minor pruning and pulling. After everything looked the way I wanted it I planted broccoli, cauliflower, butter lettuce, kale, chard, peas and collard greens. We'll see what does what over the fall season and into winter.

My tilapia turned cannibal. I found bones in the bottom of the tank, either they ate one of their own or caught and devoured a large frog. I ordered some better feed last week that will be here in a couple days since they have almost completely stopped eating the feed store catfish-food that I bought (huge mistake there). Also have some duck week on the way that I'll start growing in a separate container and feed to them once a week or so as a treat.

I bet something died and your fish were eating the remains; how large are your Tilapia?

The largest is about 8" long, most of them are between that and 6". The new food came in yesterday and when I fed them they actually rolled at the top of the water to feed. No more cheap feed for the fish.

Took a look at the grow beds last night after work and the broccoli, cauliflower, butter lettuce, kale, chard, peas and collard greens that I planted a few days ago have already sprouted. I ended up using most of the seeds since they got wet in the refrigerator a few months back and I was afraid they'd all gotten ruined. No the case it seems. I've got upwards of 50 each cauliflower and broccoli out there, easily that many butter lettuce and collard greens and quite the mess of kale and chard. I hope the temps continue to drop over the next few weeks as I don't want a warm snap to cause the plants to stunt or bolt on me.

Wish us luck!!

good luck! You can eat the greens young or transplant them, or...thin. (I hate thinning. I am always afraid that I am pulling out the best one, and they all deserve a chance.

I have had collards and broccoli that have been doing well and they have been in some hot temps...upper eighties and lower nineties. They have been in the ground since mid August. I also have some chard in containers and they seem to be doing well also.

I would really like to find a way to post some pictures because I am really proud of them....for a change....the ones in pig dirt and being watered from the pond.

I planted Sun King broccoli and it always does well for me. I got the seeds at Home Depot.
