Is that a good idea or bad?? I have a 30GAL that is empty, thinking maybe a brooder for the 6 silkie babies coming soon... it'll be indoors, there my oldest kid's so there going in her room... she should love that noise

anyhow....

I'd get a lid because i have cats, open wire of coarse. I can suspend the heat lamp from the ceiling to adjust the height of it too. My concerns are lack of air flow?? realistic concern or overly worried. My last brooder is going to some ducklings so i am out of any, so now onto brooder #2( this is a sickness i tell you)

People do it all the time, though I agree with you, I'd be concerned about the poor ventilation. That is really very little space for chicks, cone they are a week or two old, at least. Maybe you could get away with it for a week or so, especially if you have a ceiling fan, or some other way of stirring the air a little in there.

It's my understanding that new chicks and ducks need high brooder walls to protect them from drafts. I would think an aquarium would work great for the first week at least. After that, maybe not so much for ducks because they grow so quickly. But I don't see a problem for chicks. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Yeah, i am just not sure i'm convinced... i could switch later on but what a pain, better to start from the get-go till out of the house vs changing over.

Depends on whether it's drafty, and the temps themselves. I raised some 1-2wk olds ducks in a dog crate in my duck barn last summer they were fine so that is wire sides.

The higher sides are ok, i just worry about ventilation, not sure if fish aquariums are sufficient. The air can be a bit stagnant in my experience.
