Aquarium Hobbyists, need some suggestions!

Yes you gave me a few ideas! In the Biocube I have the original power head/filter that came with it along with an additional powerhead that we bought. (I had a huge hair algae bloom when I first got it and we were told it was due to bad water flow). The octagon however only has one power head. I may need another one for it. As for the lights, the Biocube has a Coralife fluorescent 10,000k 24watt and a Coralife Actinic 24 watt. The octagon has three 15 watt fluorescents. I'm planning on making it a reef tank sometime so I will have to buy some actinics for blue lighting. I realize that octagons aren't the greatest compared to a rectangular tank, but it's the biggest I have and there were saltwater fish in it originally. Protein skimmers are another option too. I already have several test kits. I was kind of hoping just to start out with simpler corals (i'm not a professional - yet) so the less hardier ones I'll stay away from. I was thinking more towards Xenias, mushrooms, leathers, around that range. Maybe more live rock too, I need to get that octagon filled up! Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays!

Yeah softies would be what you want for that low of wattage.

I would highly recommend if you want anything besides softies to invest in a Metal halide. With a deep, odd shaped tank it will be the only way to get good light to the bottom.

Check out Reefcentral dot com. There is a LOT of drama there but you might get some ideas. Also check to see if you have a local reef club.

First of all, decide if you want reef or fish tanks, they require different lighting and water chemistry requirements.
MANY people mix reef and fish with no problems because they did a lot of research or were just lucky.

Good animals cost big money. Do your research first!.

Not to be rude, but I've been in this hobby for 3 years now. I've done the research, I've subscribed to a great magazine. I've done the research. I want a reef tank and I know the requirements for it. (i.e. lighting, trace elements, compatibility, etc.) I've researched the fish that I would like and they are compatible. If they weren't, then I would go with FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquarium. Currently it is a FOWLR set up in both saltwater tanks and I would like to move on. I KNOW what fish will live in harmony with soft corals and small reef fish and which ones don't.

DO: clownfish, tangs, damsels, gobies, anthias, etc.
DON'T: trigger fish, eels, lionfish, cowfish, pufferfish.
Also depends on the size of the fish each is kept with.

Just to name a few...

I've even bought/checked-out a few fish keeping books. Trust me, I know what i'm doing. All I asked was some suggestions on what I might get, like fish, corals, certain products, or whatever. I probably should have stated that in my first post. Thank you though for the consideration. I may not have decades of experience, but what other way to learn than live?

I just picked up (WELL OK - IT WAS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM MY UNBORN CHILD.

lol) a new 10,000k & 6500k T5 light set for the canopy on my 29gal Planted Tank from That Fish Place. You would love that shop! It was a family tradition for years that my dad would take me to Lancaster to pick some fish as well. Now that I'm pregnant, maybe I can carry on the Aquarium hobby with the next generation.

Good luck picking something suitable. I had my first Fish only salt tank when I was about 8 or so. I used to have a Dwarf Lionfish that I loved to feed by hand and an eel that I fed with a turkey baster. Good stuff!.. well, until he committed suicide one sad day when I was at school.

when i had my salt tank, i had sea horses and little star fish!..they were so cute!....i also liked my sea anemones.....and i had a clown fish to go along with the aneomones....although..the anemone ate one of my sea horses..so..yeah..skip them...

I had a 55 saltwater fish with live rock tank. Had some damsels, false percula, cleaner shrimp, turbo snails, chaeto and anemones. I am going to make a 20 gal saltwater tank after I move the buttons out of it in the future. I recommend using a forum called fishlore. I been on it since 07 I believe. very helpful people.

Hey! I have two 29 gallon aquariums. Only one is set up. It has tropical fish in it. I have a ton of supplies for it. I can get a pic of it later.

Good luck!

Cody!!
