Aracona laying hen has swollen abdomen and hot

Sounds like the egg is lodged in the vent and can't make it out. If you have a vet who will see chickens and don't mind taking her in, that's the best option. The egg may have to be broken to get it out - that's what I had to do with my hen - but it's best handled by a vet because you don't want to rupture anything inside and you have to get all the shell out.

I don't think there's any point at which there's nothing you can do - as a last ditch effort, you can always break the egg and get it out.

Keep us posted on what the vet does.

Thanks so much, I took her by my vet today and he gave her a calcium shot with something else to help her pass the egg. I have still been soaking her and if she is not better tomorrow he gave me another shot for tomorrow. I hope she comes out of it. Heres praying. thanks

Oh he did try to feel for the egg but he said it was to far in to feel. That is why he is trying this route. Thanks and I will keep you posted.

I have given my hen another shot of the calcium to help rid her of the egg but nothing yet. Her abdomen is getting less tight. I have still been soaking her to maybe relax and loosen the egg. Still hoping she will pull through.

How is she doing this morning? Did the vet tell you she was eggbound, or was he going on what you told him?

I hope she is better.

She is eating and acting fine other than she still has swelling but it has gone down some since he gave her the shots. He checked her for an egg but could not feel one. Said it was probably in there to far to feel. That is why he gave the shots. I have soaked her 3 times a day to help her pass the egg but nothing. Hopefully she will pull through. thanks

Here's another possiblity... heart/liver failure leading to ascites. Is she full of liquid by any chance? I had a bird who ended up standing like a pinguin, chose to cull her after a week or so as nothing passed. As soon as I cut into the abdomen, fluid literally gushed out.

Hopefully it's not that. Good luck!

ascites (fluid ) as a secondary complication also often accompanies reproductive problems ... cold will worsen the condition (whatever the underlying cause) ... keep her in a warm draftfree and temp stable area until you figure out what to do will go a long way as a supportive measure.

thanks for all your help. She seems back to herself and the abdomen has shrunken and hopefully this will be gone by the weekend. She is acting normal and eating and pecks at me when I go to pet her. She seems to have her spunk back. Thanks again.
