I have a 3 week old araucana chick that is tailed. I noticed a strange little skin colored growth on its back, above its tail feathers. It's in line with his spine and it resembles a little finger. Thin and about 1/8 inch long. I was wondering if it has anything to do with the fact it is an Araucana and should be rumpless, maybe some sort of genetic boo-boo. I tried to take a picture but its so small and my camera wouldn't zoom in close enough.

Would the oil gland stick up? Araucanas shouldn't have an oil gland but it shouldn't have a tail either. It almost looks like a little penis sticking out of its back.Sorry for the description but thats what I thought of when I first saw it.

Possibly the gene that allows some to be born with tails also allows for oil glands as well

Maybe the two go hand in hand. Sounds like an oil gland to me.

That first picture looks like it! I still don't know why it sticks out of the skin though. I've had plenty of chicks and never once seen the gland stick out. So far no ones picked at it.
