Araucana thread anyone?

I am really surprised that the breeders mix colors as often as they do. You would think "breeding towards the standard" would apply to STANDARD colors as well. :idunno The thought of throwing in a white with any color makes me cringe. All I can think is "OMG, you'll NEVER get that white out!!!" But maybe I'm the only one anal retentive about that.

I thought they have been doing this to create new varieties, all the while hoping to make these other varieties standard?

I don't think so. I've seen where both Anns have said the APA is so hard to convince to change things it seems an impossible task. They can't even get them to include clean faced birds in the standard.

I think if they included clean faced birds no one would breed tufted birds.
But I do agree that trying to have a new breed or variety added to the APA SOP can be a pain. I think minimum is 5 years.

I think that they’re working with dominant white and not recessive white so it may be easier to breed out.

We lost our double tufted chick this week. :hit Very sad as she was my personal favorite personality-wise, but she wasn't growing, and was half the size of the other two.

Here's our two that are left. NN/Aracauna and Norwegian Jaerhon/Aracauna. These are 3 weeks old, and it's already easy to see we have at least one roo. :(

I am so sorry you lost a chick. It always seems to be the favorite. :hugs

Since my little runt appears to be thriving, I'm going to share some pictures of my little oddity. (Sorry about the poor picture quality). S/he is one week old today.

This "white" chick hatched out of this pair:

FOR REAL!
I had my eggs marked, NONE of the blue x blue eggs hatched - so it can't be splash...the 2 black/mottled eggs hatched as one black and one mottled, so how in the world did I get a yellowish/white chick out of a birchen x BBR pair???
