Araucana thread anyone?

Slightly off topic but i've been trying to find a source for hatching eggs of rumpless araucana, not had a lot of success. I don't really care about color, i tend to prefer solids, would really like blues and splashes, buffs, reds, blacks, whites, doesn't matter, just want rumpless (remind me of giant button quail running around haha). Oh and large fowl, not bantams.
Please send me a pm if you will have some available.
Thanks
Sib

Hi Ann,

What makes him brown red? I was calling him a black breasted gold birchen. Even tho the breast is so mottled. I posted on the araucana club hoping someone would correct me and tell me what he is.

He is bigger than Brad who was a big boy. Brads girls look like babies next to him. I do still have 3 of Brads boys and they are really big also. I didn't realize how medium size my birds were till I brought him home. Brads boys are in a different pen that isn't near the other birds so I never think to compare the size. Yesterday was an eye opener.

I am going to give the two blue girls I got from you to the new guy since the roo they are in with hasn't been doing his job for over two months now.

I was looking through the chicken calculator and noticed that when you pair a birchen with a duckwing you only get birchen. Why is that. I take that means breeding him gets me no closer to my beloved duckwings. I am going to keep all my duckwing girls away from him if that is the case. Genetics in chickens is so confusing. I found out that my bbr hens have a columbian gene which is why they arn't colored correctly. Good news is I like the columbian effect so that is ok.

Lanae,
That is soo cool! Nice rooster there! Love his tufts and just his overall look. Sounds like you had a blast.

I'm hoping there will be some Araucana's at the show in March here in Missouri (Cape Girardeau) I'm taking a couple of my Serama roosters to show, my first ever show. My Araucana chicks are too young to take to sell but I want to keep them a while to see what I have anyway.

Syble,
I have a tufted/rumpless rooster if you would rather try that than eggs and probably cheaper in the long run. I couldn't send a PM to you for some reason but if you want you can email me at [email protected]

We're under a foot of snow now and it's just getting started here

It's supposed to get down to -6 this week so I was so glad I didn't have to go in to work today. It's so bad they actually closed the surgery center where I work! I'll be hauling water and they're getting cracked corn with the regular pellets and crumbles and they don't seem bothered yet but it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

All the judges the last three years have said he is brown red (birchen). Anyway, you can see he is crow winged. How duckwing comes from this is a mystery to me as I have no grasp of poultry genetics.

Crossing Duckwing x Black makes this exact color, although of course you can have it look like this (golden) or silver birchen or a solid brown-red.

I'd like to see yours actually breed true though, because I've yet to see true Birchen Araucanas. I'm on the look for some though. . . But so far everyone's, including mine, that look like Birchens are just a cross that look similar, but genetically are not actually crow-winged.

thanks smoothmule but i'm kinda limited to getting hatching eggs for this spring. I'm not looking for eggs just yet, more like in the spring. Any one having eggs in the spring from rumpless stock i would like to hear from ya. I've only been able to find eggs from tailed stock :S
Thanks

Tailed stock? You talking Easter Eggers? Or is there someone actually breeding tailed but true, purebred Araucanas?
